The project I have contains about 10 audio tracks (vocal, drums, guitars). For the most part, timing is good as we used metronome to do critical tracks. Still, there are a few tracks where the timing is off noticeably and I have been trying to use both Quantize and Groove Quantize feature with no results:-( Since I am a newbie to Sonar X2, I believe the problem lies with me. Is there a good tutorial or video that can show how I can use quantize?

What I am trying to quantize is fairly simple. The song is in 3/4 time signature and I would like to quantize to 1/4 note beats.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks
Ravi

I wanted to write 'Quantize and Groove Quantize is only for midi' ..

Then I saw the Quantize screen with check boxes for "audio" - I've never tried it on audio, have you check those boxes ?

I've did a little test, but seems did not quantize my audio track (perhaps it's already on time and I didn't hear much difference).. I'll be interested to know as well.

Or you can use the AudioSnap palette and manually adjust some part of the audio..

I haven't tried quantizing audio, someone wiser than me will say more, but I doubt you can quantize audio with decent results just like that. Maybe on clip start-end-level? Or a drum track with clear transients? How could the software know about the rhythm or tempo of a, say, vocal track? At least I think some Audio-Snap type transient marking should be necessary. There is no tempo information in a wav file.

AudioSnap does have options that allow the quantize audio.  It does take a little experimentation to get right, and the on-line sounds aren't as good as when they are bounced using the batch algorithums, but I have had some success with it.

Older video, but still relevant

Theres an easy way to sync them up if all audio tracks

If it were me, Id pick the best track to use for timing,

Turn on Audio Transients for that track

open Audio Snap and adjust your threshold to were your transients are hitting were needed

Select the clip in that track and right click

Scroll down the pop-up window to " Pool"

Select "Add Clips to Pool"

This will set your timing for other Audio clips

Go to the track you want to sync the timing on

Turn on its Audio Transients

Adjust threshold as needed

Select the clip

Right Click and scroll down to Pool

Select "Quantize to Pool"

You will notice your transients move to the closest marks/lines

Scroll through the clip after zooming in a little bit and drag the ones that are still off to where the line up on the Pools lines

Hope this helps

If you are going to quantize audio there's a few things that will help you get better results.

  1. Make sure transient markers line up with transients.
  2. Use the audiosnap resolution filter (and threshold) to filter out unwanted transients
  3. If working on multiple mic'd instruments such as drums, make use of the "merge and lock markers" command. Method will vary slightly depending on tracks/instrument.
  4. Use the "Split clip at beat" option. This will move transients and audio rather than stretching it.
  5. Like all quantizing how successful it is will depend on the original material and the settings you use in the quantize dialogue.

Hey Karl,

Did you do a video on that process for X1?

Your videos are such a huge help for old forgetful minds like myself

I didn't do one on quantizing in X1. It is covered in the SWA Complete X2 video but if I post that on youtube SWA might be a little upset.  Sorry.
