I am mainly looking for transfer of automation, panning, busses. track names. i understand that plugins would not transfer. Has anyone ever done this successfully

I really don't think you are going to be able to do that. You'd have to print all that stuff to the waves because a lot of what you listed is directly in Sonar. The new program wouldn't be able to read the code that created all that stuff.

I may be wrong but I've never heard of anyone doing that.

AFAIK: No program is going to take a Sonar project and completely convert it to another format. Your best bet is export to OMF or save the individual tracks to broadcast WAV files and load those into SAW.

Volume, pan, automation, effects are not saved.

Tracks, clip positions, slip edits, fades and crossfades (as destructive edits) are saved.

You'll have to write down your track settings if you want to transfer them. You'll need to make a track sheet... just like in the old days when working with reel-to-reel.

Track sheet? Writing things down? Did we lose a war or something?!

Oh, but it was soooo much fun working with reel-to-reel... Ha! Believe me... we all have it good these days. Better than good, more like fantastic. Being able to record, edit, process, mix, and master all inside a PC? Sure, we have to deal with some bugs, but that's nothing compared to splicing audio tape and 1 AM on a deadline. Not doing that again... no thank you.

@Scott... Yeah, I sure as heck wouldn't want to deal with all that. I used to work as a grunt in a few different studios of varying degrees of modernity and the analog based one never even put down a single track in the whole decade or so it was there because they could never afford to have it completed. Just a bunch of old gear sitting there collecting dust. It was areal shame. The half digital half analog one was great and they cranked out quite a bit of stuff but eventually it went under due to high overhead. The fully digital one was part of a multimedia complex and it just did what it was supposed to and a lot of the times was running 24/7.

For my own purposes there is no way in BLEEP I'd have the money, room, intelligence or patience to run an analog studio. I'm lucky to have gotten into the production side of things after the switchover to digital was pretty much finalized.

It is some time since I last used OMF - so I am a bit rusty - but unless there has been some progress since I last used it, then midi data is another thing that doesn't get saved.
Also make a note of project tempos, as (I'm reasonably certain) that you will want to set your new project to the correct tempo BEFORE you import the OMF or track splits may not align correctly.

Hope that is correct info.
