John,

1) Not all companies have updated their drivers/programs for WIN8.

2) I ALWAYS wait until the first Service Pack with Microsoft. Just like the smarter folks wait until the first patch from the bakers

3) Win7 Pro is just rock solid, which links back to points 1 & 2.

4) The Pro version is the best version to get because it gives you all the access you want and need without the fluff from Ultimate.

Some have not updated their drivers for Win 7. This is not the problem it may seem to be at first glance,

Waiting for a patch is a wise ided but how do you know that there will be one?

Vista is rock solid for me too. So what. Windows 8 is also rock solid.

Windows 8 Pro is the only version one would use for an Intel or AMD desktop.

There is no reason to avoid Windows 8.

Not for using Sonar probably, assuming your collection of plugs etc. will authorize and run on Win8. On a DAW I usually only have a couple of applications open and running at a time, and windows 8 is fine for that. I assume there has been improvement in the code, but the experience on audio applications is not uniformly positive.

On a work machine, however,  I typically have a dozen open apps with several windows in each, and the Windows 7 user interface was the best MS has come up with for that kind of work. That fine multitasking environment has been abandoned in favor of longer battery life and the hope of training the masses to quit their keyboards and love Microsoft's new machines. Whatever under the hood advances have been made in Win8 are totally lost on office applications etc., but so were those in Vista and Win 7.

My only REAL issue with Win 8 so far has been the Roland Quad Capture Win 8 Driver...

NONE of my IK Stand Alone programs recognize it...

However, ALL my other stand alones and DAW's recognize it just fine...

Might be an IK Coding problem....which is probably more likely...

Other then that...it's great....

What about Win 8 and the "no legacy drivers for firewire" issue? When would that possibly be corrected? If ever? Until then, how could Win 8 possibly be considered a positive OS for a DAW? Granted, many people don't use firewire, but a LOT of people still use firewire.

I am unaware that Windows 8 will not recognize a firewire controller. It does on my machine. It is listed as a IEEE 1394 host controller. I checked here Firewire and it seems Windows 8 does indeed support firewire.

You will need Windows 8 drivers for the audio device though. You may be able to use Windows 7 drivers.

I don't know how one can make this leap in reasoning when you have the very same ability to turn off anything you don't want in Windows 8 as one did in both Vista and Win 7.

The ability to multi task has been enhanced in Win 8. It also works better with multi monitors too.

Windows 8 is a multi tasking OS just as Windows 7 was. If you think that win 8 is only the start screen and can only use metro apps you are completely wrong.

I don't even see the start screen. I boot directly to the desktop.

If I were upgrading my OS and the drivers I need (mostly just my sound card) were certified as compatible there is no way that I would not go with Win 8.

OP: I opted for Win 7 Pro a couple years back because I wanted to be able to have access to > 16G ram and Pro gives you the ability to log onto a Windows Domain network.

I remember reading about that during the Win8 beta and wondering if I'd have any problems with the release version. It turned out I was able to use my Win7 Echo Audiofire driver with no problems. Echo released a Win8 driver about a month ago, and performance is pretty much identical with that one. They've always written great drivers, though. I've never had a problem in the three operating systems I've used it with.

I call win8 being ugly a drawback. It looks like some sort of toy in a daycare center. Main reason I didn't go with it on my new system.

ok.. I like the "up to date" look.
Perhaps you are confused about "METRO" look? There are normal desktop view too like Windows 7.
Here is tutorial with a young man about Windows 8 BETA.

Worst tutorial EVER!!!
I got about 3 min in and wanted to put a bullet in my head.

Out of all the videos what in God's name made you pick that one?
I was actually yelling at the kid to get on with it already.

Simply painful...... Why would you do that to us Freddy, why???

Some have had (boot) problems with upgrades from Win 7 to Win 8 that involve the UEFI bios option...make sure to read upgrade instructions carefully.
