konradh - thanks for the listen and the comments.
In terms of getting a good tone, I've experienced trial and error as well. A few pointers that I hope will be helpful to you:
1) Make sure that your levels are good. If the input level is too small, it seems that it will sound more noisy and hissy. If your input or output levels are too high you will get unpleasant distorting.
2) Use your noise gate. I've had good results with the noise gate in TH2 (which is what I used on this recording). I also use Amplitube sometimes. It also has a noise gate, but I haven't had as good results with it.
3) Consider your pickups. I like the results I get from humbuckers when using an overdriven sound. Single coils are better for a clean sound IMO (though this may be a matter of taste). Single coils, though, do seem to do quite well with an "edgy," lower to medium gain sound. TH2 also has a setting for the type of pickups you are using.
If you want more details about the settings, effects and amp models I used in TH2 for this, I'd be happy to share. Just PM me.
thegaltierbrothers - thanks for the good words! I appreciate your taking time to listen.
