Well, I was going to update my studio computer to Windows 10, but now I wonder if that is such a good idea.

I've kept it off of the Internet except to get Command Center updates.

I have already been putting this off until i finish up a major album project I'm almost done with.

What are my chances of getting this to work?

You're only going to find anecdotal evidence. But Windows once snuck in an update and I had to reinstall Sonar and all my plugins, along with a fresh install of Windows. I would load Sonar, but nothing would work. It was just...no audio. It might have been actually frozen...I can't remember. In blind rage it's pretty hard to remember what happened.

Edit: You'd probably be best served by keeping your PC frozen in time if using Sonar. That means disconnecting from the internet and creating an iso disc of your system, like many have said. Windows 10 and Microsoft's new "business" model has hastened the demise of Cakewalk, imho. Microsoft and Gibson both have gone to the dark side and anything you can do to distance yourself would be good. It's just harder with Microsoft since they run almost every OS on everyone's computer.

If you're going to do it do it now while you still have access to the CW servers.

Don't even think about upgrading unless you're done with any important projects.  And even if you are....

You list an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra as your interface.  You don't see many M-Audio interfaces in people's sigs anymore.  Few people are buying the newer ones (poor-ish quality), and the older ones are not supported under Win 10.

Bottom line, if your Fast Track Ultra is working fine with Win 8.1, then consider yourself lucky and stay with what you're using. (FWIW, I'm still on Win 8.1 because it's rock-solid -- in fact, it may be the most rock-solid OS I've ever had the pleasure to use. Additionally, a week doesn't goes by that I don't see a post from someone upset that a Win 10 update has messed up their PC.  I'll keep my outdated, stable system, thank you very much!).

From my experience, I had no problems transitioning to Win 10 from Win 7. I have a lot of old hardware and only a couple of them wouldn't work on Win 10 because of outdated drivers. It is worth checking online to see if many people are having problems running your hardware on Win 10 first. As far as Sonar goes, never had a problem with Win 10 here.

I think I'm going to take JonD's advice and stay with Win8.

I keep my studio computer off of the Internet except for SONAR updates.

I'm going to use CCC to update to 23.10.0.14 asap.

Thanks to all for the input.
