Anyone else have this or maybe I'm not set up right.
I have not been using soft synths very long but have always noticed they often don't play first try.
I then go back to the start, play again and they are ok.
When I was first installing them, it caused no end of grief because I would think something was wrong with the setup and I'd go tweaking things which really screwed me around.

You have to:

a) First make sure you have loaded a patch into the synth and

b) Enabled MIDI Echo on the synth's MIDI track

Also with my M-Audio controller if I don't turn it on BEFORE opening Sonar then when I do turn it on Sonar has to figure out what to do with it so I always make sure to turn it on right after I've booted up.

If it's a USB powered controller then do you even have to turn it on and off manually? Mine just turns on and off automatically when I boot or shut down.

I think it depends on your usb ports. The ones on the rear of my Asus motherboard stay powered even with the computer off, so I unplug my interface when I'm done (the interface doesn't have a power switch).

Hi, sharke. The M-Audio Oxygen 25 is USB powered but it has an off/on switch as well so I've gotta flip that after boot up. Same with my padKontrol.

you can always try reseting the midi engine.
its located right inside the transport module.

this shouldnt happen unless your device is not being seen right away.
sometimes reseting the ME does this.

look at it from a few different angles, does it only happen on the first synth you insert,or does it happen with everytime you insert a synth?

I think that may be an issue with X1. Going to X2 seems to have resolved that.

I reset the Midi in the transport module and it does play the synths, but so does stopping and starting again.

I can reproduce the symptoms consistently.
I open sonar and then a song that includes soft synths.
I hit play and all the audio plays normally but no synths. (altho 1 of the two synth track meters is active)
I simply rewind or sometimes, stop and then play again, and the synths are now included in the playback and both midi track meters are active.
These are not frozen tracks and there is no audio track for them, just the midi data tracks.

My controller is a Boss BR800 and remains on the whole time. I'm not aware of anything needed for it regarding midi.

I guess now that I know this always happens i can just compensate by restarting but wondered if there was a setting I'm missing is all.

if its a one time deal, like you need to hit start before they kick in and it only happens at the begining of a project,i wouldnt worry about it too much.
i can understand your reason for concern though 100%.

but if it is a one time thing at the begining of opening a project, one time deal.i would just keep doing what your doing.
hit play before doing any serious work.

sorry to hear you can find a fix for it.
this is new to me,at least in x2,havent had it happen.

wish i could be more help to the issue your having.

Best of luck on this    :)

Are you always starting play from the beginning of the song?
If you press play in the middle of a note the synth won't start playing until the beginning of the next note. The soft synth needs to see a note on message.
I discovered this using the arpegiator. Notes that are a measure long ,if started after the beginning of the note, wont play until the beginning of the next note.
