I have a speech recording I'm trying to fix but it has audio clipping in spots due to recording levels too high.  I seem to remember a tool that would soften out really sharp audio transients with some kind of softer fade.  Was that in Sonar or maybe I'm thinking of something else.

You can try the TS64 Transient Shaper in Sonar. Not much you can do with clipped audio other than iZotope Rx 2 Advanced in my humble opinion. That program is total sickness for stuff like that.

You'll need a wave editor and even that may not be entirely successful. Audacity is a freebie if it's a one off job. I've also used Steinberg's Wavelab in the past.

Thanks guys.  I wasn't sure if I remembered that correctly or not.  Don't think I can afford Izotope at this time but someday....

Can you not re-record it at a lower level?

This is always the best solution

Sony Sound Forge has a clip removal tool that works. It nicely rounds out the flat tops of the wave.
As already mentioned, you can do it by hand with the waveform draw tool. Simply draw rounded curves where the flat top is.
