i have sonar x1le, a roland rd300sx keyboard, and tascam 144 hardware.  i have everything hooked up, but when i set up separate midi tracks, they all pull from the same voice from the roland keyboard.  i set up different channels within the software, but i can't figure out how to separate the roland voices to separate tracks.  i'm sure it's something simple, but can anyone assist?  thanks so much!

I don't know what to say if you have each MIDI track on different output channels and you're still hearing the same instrument sound.
Hopefully, someone else will have some ideas.

I'm wondering if you're struggling with something I didn't get early on (so ask questions because there are a lot of great people here who love helping others).

If I go into the weeds and you already understand this stuff just say so, but when I first got my son a synth (I play guitar, he does keyboards) I tried hooking it up to Sonar thinking we could record MIDI tracks and somehow get the same sounds his synth produced.  What I didn't realize was that the MIDI track is just instructions, that I needed to route those to a synth to get anything audible AND (here's what I really didn't expect) that I might not be able to get the soft synth models that match the Roland synth.

I know it's possible to route the recorded MIDI back to the hard synth to have it convert that to audio and then, using the synths outputs route the audio back to an audio track in Sonar to record the result.

Let us know if I'm in the ballpark of the problem here and then there are others who know MIDI far better than I do who might jump in.  Anyway, ask questions 'cause we all learn from each other.

I had a similar problem and can't quite remember how I solved it as I am at work at the moment - is your synth multi timbral as I remember my first mistake was to try to play different sounds from a mono timbral synth and it doesn't work

And don't worry about being a newbie - I still reckon I am after a year or so of trying to get my head round Sonar and an A- Pro controller - possibly two of the most unintuitive pieces of sw / hw I have ever come across!

wow.  i am very happy to see your responses!  thank you so much for your willingness to help me out.  the sad thing is that way back in 2006 when i had a 32-bit computer, i had cubase LE, a tascam 122, and the same exact keyboard.  i somehow was able to hook it all up and using MSB and LSB settings (not even sure what that stands for) i was able to assign the actual keyboard synths (which i love, especially roland grand piano), and the software recognized individual voices during multi-track playback.  you can hear an example of what i was able to accomplish on my humble website: www.andypeyton.com ... and i assure you that is not a plug for my music.  i haven't sold a cd for years now, lol. :)  but now that i have a 64-bit system, and this new software, which looks awfully similar to cubase, i just can't seem to figure out what i'm doing.  and joe, how would i know if my keyboard is multi timbral?  if it means what i think it means, it is.

That's the way it's supposed to work.
I've never had to do any special set-up to get my program to play through my Yamaha keyboard using multiple voices. Just select the output, channel, bank and patch in the MIDI track and it played.
Can you post screen shots of your MIDI tracks and their properties?

Ah sorry I was confused (my fault not yours!) - I was thinking you had a keyboard controller and you were trying to play a VST synth through it - afraid I haven't used a keyboard with inbuilt sounds with Sonar - good luck in solving the problem!
