hadn't noticed this before but when playing back a project the event list is not in sync with the project, it's one position ahead of where the project is....
anybody else see this... here's a vid of the problem  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giWgYVgo_Mo

Definitely not a bug, the event list has been like that for decades.  the placekeeper is always at the NEXT note to be sounded.  Don't worry about it.  When you need to verify where you're at in the piece, use the main window on the control bar in either MBT time or SMPTE time.  The placekeeper in the event list is not designed as a marker of the now time.

hrm weird.  The manual says "[style="color: rgb(70, 70, 70);"]During playback, the event list scrolls to display the events at the current time. The current event is centered in the Event List during playback, and the highlight is on the correct event when playback stops. "  http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation/default.aspx?Doc=SONAR%20X2&Lang=EN&Req=EditingMIDI.44.html#1085014[style="color: rgb(70, 70, 70);"]  when i hit stop the highlight was on the next event.  i wasn't trying to verify where i was in the piece but looking into ways feed event list info and notes into external apps for processing and triggering real-time response algorithms.

I think the manual is incorrect, or you may be misinterpreting what it is saying.  The manual might be implying that the scrolling stops in the center of the window, at the centered note, but the centered note is not the one last heard, but the one about to be heard.  As far as what the event list reads when playback is stopped, it all depends on which option you've chosen, to stop at the current time, to rewind to start, or to rewind to the beginning of the time where playback began.

For noting the exact time of events either in SMPTE time or MBT time, use either the main display on the control bar, or use BIG TIME, the extra large time display.  Of course the real accuracy of the display is wholly dependent upon the quality of your sound card.

right, which is suspect because when the event list hits the end then "x events shown" is highlighted instead of the next note to be played.  that's a little odd and just looked funky to me....

I have always look at this as a data packet being delivered. It should have delivered it and will be ready to deliver the next data packet. Data packet being a MIDI event. If you think of it as a data point with a time element in order to finish delivering and stay in sync it would need to be seen as just a little ahead.

This is a very bad way of describing or explaining it but its the best I can come up with.

I would not look for a relationship between the event list cursor and the accuracy of your sound card.  The accuracy will be determined not only by the limtations of the card, but your buffer and latency settings.  The correct place to monitor this is the playback vertical line moving through the staff bar, the audio wave window and other views.  The accuracy will also effect when a volume node on an envelope in your audio wave view will be recognized.  Those are the places to be concerned with timing inaccuracies.   The event list is a great view to insert controller changes, patch changes, tuning changes, attack and release commands, expression and pan commands, etc.  That's really what it is designed to be, a detailed event editor, not a monitoring view.

i still find it odd that you can edit program and controller changes based on event view if it doesn't give you an accurate representation of the playback position.  that being said, jsg, do you ever attent the sf electornic music meetup group?? it would be good to meet another sonar user! :D

It is accurate, it lands on the beat that comes next.  If you want greater accuracy than that, I've said it once before, pay attention to the main time display and/or the vertical time line that scrolls in various views.
I have been to that group a few times, but not in the recent past.  I also gave music theory and electronic music instruction to two members of that group.
