Hi - I just became aware of this Focusrite VRM box that simulates dif types of speakers. Are there plugs that do the same? Thanks.

Hi !

Well ... you could use a convolution engine (Cakewalk Perfect space, or SIR2, or Waves IR1),
then load up a convolution that emulates the room you desire...

For my part, I've found an impulse of Auratones speakers that I use a lot.

You can look out on the web for lots of convolution files (usually WAV files), you'll find mostly reverbs, but there are some for speakers too,
and some gear as well (guitar/bass cabs etc..)

You probably discovered this VRM because of Musician's friend SDOTD. I checked for some reviews and demos,
and I don't know ... sounds  a bit like a joke to me... I'd be curious to try one to convince me it's actually worth something paying for.

I hope that helps !

Cheers !

The VRM box isn't a joke, it's a very useful tool for checking mixes on headphones. It doesn't recreate the experience of listening on monitors, it just gives you an idea of how your frequencies and levels will translate to them. If you can get your mix to sound good on all of the speaker/room settings, there's a very good chance that it will sound good on real speakers too.

The advantage it has over other comparable plugs is the flexibility - you get way more environments to choose from.

I also tried the Redline Monitor which is also very good, however I didn't find it as useful as the VRM Box.

Thanks! I will follow some of those leads. I had forgotten about convolution. SOS had a mixed review of the VRM: http://www.soundonsound.c...s/focusrite-vrmbox.htm

GIM - I've got the trial Isone version. Do you use it to test different environments to get the best mix, & then bypass it before exporting the file? Or do you keep it in to color the final sound?

Hi,you can create a bus before the master bus couse you can monitor your mix through the isone pro and export your mix on master bus with the right eq.Isone pro is only for headphone monitoring.Read with care the manual for the first setting.Best

Parish - thanks for the link to the SOS review. Bottom line of his review summarized it as essential and he determined it was a keeper. I see why there are questions about whether plugs might be available but it's helpful to me to see that even a pretty critical natured reviewer decides the VRM is valuable.

+1 on the VRM box. It's a good/useful tool for the price.

Guys - check out the Isone that GIM recommended. It's amazing...very well done & inexpensive (demo is free). It's also a plug in & eliminated some of the issues of the VRM.
