  • Using 64-bit now.... will NEVER go back to 32-bit! (p.2)

I just bought a new Toshiba laptop that came with Windows 7 64-bit. So, I installed the 64-bit version of X1 .... wow! I encourage anyone who does any recording to start using 64-bit.

I know the feeling! Welcome to the x64bit world!

32 bit Vista here and everything runs fine. No need to upgrade for me

64 bit rules my world.

I have held off as I still use lots of 32 bit Waves plugins. They were a very expensive gift a few years ago and I cannot justify / afford to upgrade.
Can the 32 bit versions be wrapped in any way?

I'm not sure about Waves as I don't use them but most 32-bit plugs will work under bitbridge or jbridge or both.

Bitbridge is in-built into Sonar and the process is pretty much automatic. Insert the 32-bit plug and it will open automatically under bit bridge. Jbridge is a (cheap) third party alternative that has built in support. I personally prefer JBridge as it has a better looking interface and I find it more user friendly in that it doesn't insist on staying on top like Bitbridge does.

Having said that both are perfectly usable and integrate seamlessly although whether that applies specifically to Waves plugs I don't know. I think Danny Danzi uses Waves and also has 64 bit installed hopefully he or another Wavews user will jump in at some point with a Waves specific viewpoint.

So, rewire doesn't work with 64-bit? I thought it was supported now....

Yeah, I just checked.... the X1D update implemented Rewire 64-bit.

I was keeping some 32 bit hosts and plugins/instruments on my computer for betatesting purposes but I finally said enough of that.  If someone wants to live in the past, let 'em but I'm not going to waste my time with 32 bit plugins or hosts.

I dunno. With an i7 Quad core and 16gb ram there seems to be little "multitasking" going on here. Some basic processes still hog the whole system it seems.

Some programs do not multitask well.  Are you noticing this just in Sonar or in general with your computer?  If you are having trouble you may want to start a thread perhaps the forum can help you sort it out.

Thanks Tom. Not an issue as much as just a general gripe. I use a few processor heavy apps and would like to see a bit more system sharing than I do, that's all. Internet activity is one. I haven't really noticed a big difference over 32 bit.

Rewire works in in 64 bit if both the host and the slave are 64 bit. If one is not 64 bit you would need to load the 32 bit version of the 64 bit one to get them to talk to each other.
