You know, I was wondering about that, Fog. Sibelius doesn't give an option, but I'll check into that.

have a look where it puts the sib.. if you defaulted program files / x86 folder = prolly 32 bit..

I can't give advice as I only use rewire with reason.

Do you have the Sibelius folder added to your VST scan list and did you run a VST scan? If Sonar doesn't know about the Rewire device, then the option to add Review device is greyed out.

Fog and Dave: there are two Sibelius folders on my computer. One of them is in the "Program Files" folder and the other is in the "x86" Program files folder. I directed Sonar to scan both folders. Sibelius still doesn't appear as a Rewire device.

According to the Sibelius 7 manual:

Troubleshooting
If  Sibelius  does  not  appear  as  a  ReWire  device  in  your  DAW,  choose Play  Setup  Playback
Devices in Sibelius and click Audio Engine Options. Click the Repair button to fix the ReWire
association, then quit and restart your DAW.
If the ReWire connection appears to be working correctly (e.g. both applications start and stop
playback correctly) but you find that you are hearing no audio from Sibelius in your DAW, check
that the current playback configuration in Sibelius is set to use virtual instruments: the host
application will not receive any sound from MIDI devices, whether they are internal (e.g. your
computer’s built-in soundcard) or external (e.g. a sound module).
If you find that Sibelius continues to start up in ReWire mode even after you have quit your DAW,
choose Play  Playback Devices and click Audio Engine Options, then click Clean Up. Now
restart Sibelius, and it should start up and operate normally once more.
Using the 64-bit version of Sibelius with ReWire

ReWire is only available in 32-bit applications, because the underlying technology by Propellerhead
Software has not yet been updated to 64-bit. However, because Sibelius uses an external component
to manage its connection to the ReWire host, you can in fact run the 64-bit version of Sibelius and
still use ReWire. However, the ReWire host application must still be running as a 32-bit application in order to
make a ReWire connection with Sibelius or another other synth application.

Rewire's location is registered to the system no amount of 'scanning' will get it to show up.

In order for it to work it has to be X1d or later for 64 bit rewire or both apps have to be the 32 bit version.

Installing a Rewire capable app. registers it to the system there's no user intervention required.

If the right versions of the software are installed then the Rewire option will not be greyed out.

In this case Sibelius 64 doesn't operate as a 64 bit Rewire slave so the only option is to Rewire via Sonar 32 and get Avid to update their Rewire implementation meantime. Propellerhead updated Rewire to 64 bit a fair while before X1D even so it's in Sibelius's court if it is still behind the times.

Dave, thanks for your post. I tried the repair option - it didn't do anything, but thanks. I had forgotten about the repair button, so at least I know it doesn't work now. As Jonbouy said, the ball is now in Avid's (Sibelius) court because Propellerhead DID make Rewire 64-bit capable months ago..... maybe even a year ago by now. So, if this doesn't work, it's not Sonar's fault, it's not Rewire's fault, it's Sibelius for not being able to communicate 64-bit to 64-bit, which makes no sense at all. 64 to 32, but no 64-64? WTF?

Simply put it's not a 64 bit capable Rewire slave yet regardless of whether it is a 64 bit application.

FWIW Rewire 64 has been available for the best part of 2 years now in fact and Props will help anyone vendor using it get up to speed, so maybe a bit of upward pressure to the makers of Sibelius is in order now you are armed with that knowledge.

Meanwhile 32 bit Sonar isn't the sacrifice it's often made out to be.  It's still Sonar.  I keep both versions installed because there's still a fair bit of 32 bit only goodness I like having native access to.

I just replied in a thread about Soundforge which raises similar concerns.  Basically if you still have a need for 32 bit applications then the best thing to do is install the 32 bit version of Sonar of course.

I think there was more keeness to go 64 bit than there was readiness or actual need in many cases.
Given that I can understand that some regularly break the 4Gb limit of 32 bit and have a genuine need for 64 bit capability, I can honestly say there hasn't been a project that I couldn't have completed so far on a 32 bit system since I went to W7 64.

I like 64 bit though because it's twice as many bits...

Besides Freddie would still be nagging me if I hadn't upgraded.

I posted about this issue on the Sibelius forum. Someone linked me to this: http://avid.force.com/pkb...oubleshooting/en362399 I'm gonna try this after work tonight. Maybe it'll work!
