Reminded me more of his second album with hints of Up.  I agree James some new material would be interesting to hear.

I'm not sure PG is up to new material. I still have, somewhere, the Melody Maker interview of his, when he left Genesis, and how disappointed he was with the over all response to TLLDOB, which, as time has gone by, has come to be appreciated more and more, and is already considered one of Genesis, best works all around, in the Progressive boards.

My take, is that with that, he became a bit too sensitive to people's likes and dislikes and the top ten world, with hits and such, and of course, when he made 10 times the money with a couple of his own pieces, now he is likely battling what he should/could do.

My thoughts are that he should stop thinking about lyrics for a while, and just compose free as you like, and see what comes of it. I'm not sure that he can think outside of his own box right now, and is too ingrained in his own fame.

I'll still take Peter Hammill any day of the week. He is still creative and impulsive and out there and always a nice listen. I think PG believes he has to be "involved" in things that are cool and right on. I like to say he just didn't grow up!

I don't agree Pedro. PG has a very impressive body of work since he left Genesis, most of which IMO creatively outstrips anything he did with the band. His 4th solo album (called Security in the US) was really groundbreaking stuff and is still one of my favourite albums ever.

Have you heard 'OVO', for example, the soundtrack he did for the Millennium Dome Show in 2000? Amazing stuff, and not any 'easy' listen for anyone, except for maybe 'Father, Son' which is just a beautiful song.

PG's Facebook page has shown a number of ProTools shots with him saying he's working.

There's one on Feb. 25th that says, "New Album still develops day by day.."

So, there's theoretically one in the works.  As usual, it might not be released until 2020 or later. (eyeroll)  The man is so detail oriented and perfectionistic.  He can't escape it.

I think the tour with Sting (starting tonight) doesn't help his progress.  I'm a bit "meh" on the new song.

Both sting and peter gabriel did a great job of extending their careers past the  early hype stage. For Sting it was jazz for peter gabriel I'm not sure what it was, he just had that cool edge that people seemed to like, especially  with the *well-read* set.  Both of them always seemed to be the grown ups in the room, even when they were young.  haha

Maybe you should read about OSANNA, the Italian band, and how they had one of these for almost two years before Genesis.  Europe has a tradition of music and theater combined that goes back hundreds of years, and seeing Genesis do this, was nothing new that had not been done before, but everyone thinks its "progressive" because of its theatrical nature!

Heck, they used masks in GREEK theater! And that kinda takes the whole "originality" concept off PG and his work. I happen to like, and appreciate his work, and have seen him in concert even (his first tour with that one band), but I do not think of him as some kind of genius original, and even ANGE, and other French and Italian bands, were doing theater on the stage inspired by Brecht and Brel ... which, of course, the English would never admit to knowing!

Makes the SPIRIT thing seem even sadder all around. Not that LZ needs the money or the accolades. That is not the issue.

I did not say I disliked his work. I happen to love his solo work, as much as I do the stuff he did with GENESIS, however, I have a tendency to think and appreciate "TLLDOB" and "SEBTP" a bit more, and probably because of the subtext and conceptual nature of the works, rather than the songs.

However, at this stage of life and work, I think that folks like PH are much more interesting and different, instead of being "cool" and "withit" and "sociallysensible", as a way to get attention.

I have watched some of the later work, and while nice with some great moments, in many ways ... it's nothing new ... as some of the previous material was.

After all these years, I'm still into NEW MUSIC, not quite rehashes of Tubular Bells, or PG songs. That is not a critical comment about them at all, it's just a preference. Imagine Stravinsky repeating himself after FIREBIRD SUITE. BTW, this time I want to hear BAPU do the instruments on TB ... he would do a much better job, than all of them, except the late's Vivian Stanshall of course! But even then, Bapu might out shine him!

We're discussing two different things.

Tony Banks hated The Lamb.

That's his problem.

(hehehehehe!!!!!)

Actually I always thought he was just not wanting to play so many different things on stage and simply using one keyboard to play the same thing with different notes was enough for him!

ROFLLLLLOLOLOL!!!!!

I have actually never thought of TB as one of the best keyboard folks around. Absolutely nothing compared to an Edgar Froese, Vangelis, Ryuichi Sakamoro, Jean Michel Jarre and the like. I could not careless what TB thought of TLLDOB in retrospect, as what you are suggesting is that the only thing he can play is a bunch of pop songs, because he has no talent for real music?

Where exactly did I, or anyone else say that? I never said anything about his keyboard skills compared to your oft-mentioned favourite players either. I don't know where you dream up this nonsense.

Banks has gone on record saying that he disliked Gabriel's story about the street-kid Rael for the Lamb, he felt it was too simple and 'un-satisfying'. he also said that none of the songs made sense out of context, apart from Carpet Crawlers and In The Cage.

You brought up the subject of TLLDOB, I'm just carrying on with it.
