 Hi Bob
"Do you have the midi track selected, and the Input Echo button 'On' for that midi track? I just opened a new project, followed the steps I listed above, and TTS-1 plays just fine - I have Input Echo on for that piano track. "
Yes..exactly the same
problem is more fundamental I think
with TTS1 assigned to an audio track that has no input and main output set the preview green buttons light when pressed but no sound is generated...there is no output and the meters do not show.
it looks very much like my softsynths don't work at all in this set up...
win8 - 64 bit - X2A - G640/MSI B75MA mobo - 4gb

What sample rate are you using?

The sample rate in Sonar MUST match the setting for your interface.

I suggest you try 44.1/24-bit with an ASIO Buffer size of either 64 or 128.  Make sure the rates match between Sonar and the interface.

Also - you posted: "TTS1 assigned to an audio track that has no input and main output set the preview green buttons light when pressed but no sound is generated...there is no output and the meters do not show"

Why do you have no input set for the audio track?  Its 'Input' should be set to grab the OUTPUT from the TTS-1, and the audio track output should be set to 'Master'.

 Hi Bob
It looks like I havn't explained this very well.
The audio track IS TTS1, and whether it has the output of the midi track assigned to its input makes no difference here.
The output of the audio track is assigned to the master output, which works under every other circumstance.
The midi track does not pass signal to the audio(TTS1) track. Furthermore, the TTS1 does not generate a preview tone.
The echo layla is set to asio 44k1 and Sonar is set to 44k1 24bit.
PS. I loaded up this morning and it all works as it should, as it did once yesterday. I am expecting it to stop working at any time.
I will see if I can get a response from Cakewalk.
many thanks for looking.

Hmmm... As a matter of interest, my QUAD-CAPTURE sound card some times suddenly stops working. I've not bothered reporting this cos I CBA, but it may be a similar issue with your Layla. To fix, I have to restart my laptop and all is well again.

I do not have any ideas as to what could be happening - perhaps it IS your interface.

When no sound come out for the TTS-1 audio track, are other things still playing OK?  (If so, then it is not the interface).

  Solved!!
I seem to have egg all over my face.
I've just found the audio engine icon....and it seems to drop out when I double click a soft synth thats in the FX box of a track.
I put this down to the smart-arse who thinks he knows his way round after nearly 20 years of cakewalk products....Ha.
In my defense the icon is not as prominent as it was in sonar up to version 6, so at a stretch I could be excused for not noticing it going out.
Apologies for causing you guys to spend any time on this....But I'm still wondering why the engine turns off so often, more reading.
thanks
Ed

Please elaborate on what you are double-clicking on that causes the engine drop out, and also what you are doing with a soft-synth as an effect?  (external knob control perhaps?).

Thanks,

Sounds like you are trying to do some things like they were done a very long time ago. You might benefit from viewing some of the videos in the SONAR University series http://www.cakewalk.com/CakeTV/

Adjusting the DropoutMsec to 500 or 750ms in AUD.INI might help the dropout problem.
