In the past Steinberg released Cubase Score, as the name says: Cubase with high quality score features. Maybe Cakewalk could do the same, Sonar Score, sounds good :-)

Notation is there merely to assist in editing MIDI tracks

sadly it doesn't pull that off. if it did i wouldn't complain. if it worked as well as final's free version i would be happy.

The "Staff" views on all DAWs are only suitable for "semi pro" "hobbyist". If you are dead serious you will fork out for Sibeliuis or Finale.

That is totally untrue. Cubase and Logic have supported a great notation ability that is meant for composers. Those notation programs you list are for printing to a standard used by music publishers to provide manuscripts. They can not in any way be a substitute for a full DAW controlling multiple sound modules.  Many composers use hardware samplers and sound modules in racks that require a proper DAW. Often they require video as well. To suggest that the market is only for hobbyists shows a lack of knowledge about who uses DAWs and how they use them.

Pro Tools is used for recording and editing and didn't traditionally support much MIDI. Cubase and Logic were aimed at those that wanted to compose. Sonar is in that same category but with a very basic notation ability. All that the people that are after much better notation ability in Sonar; just want what is standard in Cubase and Logic. That can't be that hard to understand can it?

For those that don't want notation in their DAW or have no understanding about it it would be very helpful to be quiet about it until one has some clue.

@John - remember this is an old thread.  Nothing has changed except for my little postscript today.

Dont know if this helps... been working on this to help SV users....   iphone/ipad..

Well - I purchased the Custom keypad - bout £2.50 - there's a version for ipad and iphone..

I then installed the free "tightvnc" on my computer. Selected portfwarding on my router for VNC.

Now the only 2 niggles I had was.... the custom keypad has a problem sending capitals..

It also has problem with the shift key so using ctrl+shift+1 to get a whole note in score view was worked around by doing ctrl+! .

I've only had this for a brief time so the icons I have created are note perfect to look at yet...

For notation users it adds the ability to select rhythm values which is missing... Its seems possible make keystrokes for dotted rhythms too - which I will have a look at ...

Trying to make shortcuts for screensets soon...

Its a very much work in progress... but I will get there!

And not long ago, Steinberg hired people from Sibelius, who Avid had sacked.  I think the idea is to start a whole new notation initiative of some sort, if I remember the announcement correctly.  Should be some interesting developments there in the future if it all works out.
