When you Right Click on the Speaker in the lower right corner, Does it show Presonus as your default Device?

Id also reload the drivers for it just because of the firmware download then reboot the system and the interface  (power off) once or twice just for giggles

Did some digging. Turns out WDM/KS is just peachy fine to use so carry on and don't worry about asio. It's just that some asio drivers don't play well on some systems, you just happened to have the one in a hundred that this is true.

Have also done that.  No change.

I think you're right Johnny - I think I could live with WDM.  One question first though, before I make my decision permanent (my 30 days are not up yet for vendor return).  Anybody have any idea how Presonus 44VSL and MOTU 4pre stack up beside one another as far as sound quality and coloring - and of course whether the ASIO may likely work with Sonar?  The 44VSL cost me $300 and the 4pre is going for $450.  It feels like the Presonus has an ever so slight shimmer of warmth to it.  Might the MOTU be more transparent - or does that add a little of its own flavor too?  I'm sensitive to this because my hearing isn't what it used to be -- loss of some high end with age.  So mixing gets tricky.  For some reason, the Presonus feels like I'm seeing through new glasses.  But maybe that's it - it's new glasses that will need some getting used to.

Thanks.
Gary

That question is so open to personal interpretation that I would not even ask it. The WORD is that generally you get what you pay for. And my guess is you might have the same driver issues with a product that possibly uses the same driver code.
I can't see that there would be any difference in "sound" between the two.

I had a similar problem in the beginning using w7.

The windows audio device settings had to be the same as used in Sonar.

For me this was 44.1, 24, stereo, for input and output.

And: uncheck: allow programs to take exclusive control of this device

And: communications: do nothing

Problem solved.  Returned the Presonus 44VSL.  Purchased MOTU 4pre.  Converters sound more clear and crisp - sound stage for mixing seems sharper, more defined.  No driver problems at all - install was soothingly uneventful - up and running in no time - no calls to tech support.  Cost $150 more, but the 4 weeks worth of 44VSL headaches are gone.  Everything just works.  Happy, happy, happy.  Thanks to all for the help.
