I run in to this problem all the time, probably because I suck at mixing. I get everything about where I want it level wise but the vocal could use a little more oomph. Problem is, the vocal is already on the verge of being in the red. Is there any way to lower the volume of all the tracks by a certain amount? Selecting all the tracks and adjusting one of the volumes doesn't seem to do the trick.

I could route my vocals straight to my audio interface and turn down the master buss, but that seems kludgy.

I wouldn't lower all the tracks the same amount. I would lower all of them to where its too low. And then raise one after another with getting a balance between them all in mind. Small adjustments will allow you to deal with what you want to have prominence and so on.

The idea is start low and adjust as needed.

We often think we need the very loudest from a track when its the other tracks that need to be lower.

DRamey - there's a Groove3 tutorial called Mixing with Sonar X1. The content in that is still very viable. That particular tutorial has lots of sections with tips on vocal levels and the technique of using sub busses to group sections like vocals, drums, etc. If you consider a technique described there you can route all of your vocal tracks to a bus, say called vocals, and then you can easily gradually move up or down all of the vocals at once. Of course you have the abiliy to continue the individual track levels as well separately.
