@ John T

LOL, yeah I see what you mean, however this one was a good hack. Definitely a good thing to have the account folder on another place than the OS and program folder. When you do a reinstall of the OS or install another OS you are sure you keep your data.

@ Frosty

Good one but I do not have the money at the moment. Will think about it for the future.

Not a clever hack. Use a boot loader to boot to a dedicated partition/os for your DAW. Works brilliantly. Put your X2 content on a dedicated partition as well. Leave windows folders alone! Employ backup software to back up your data.

I wouldn't personally move windows account/profile stuff from the system partion because of permission issues. You can just change the default lcoation of My Documents or default directories instead. For instance my windows profile is in it's default location on C:\ but all my directories for files are on a my external USB drive at K:\.

C:\ = Windows and Programs
D:\ DVD drive
E:\Sample Libries and Content (internal)
F:\ Audio (Internal)
K:\ Pics, music, office docs, vids, software install, etc etc (external USB 3)

It sounds like you now need to give your normal account higer level permission or admin rights to the root folder and all child objects on the partition with OS and programs .

You may get away with just appying this to the C:\Cakewalk folder and all it's child obects but you then still may run into issue with vst's and other programs.

Hope that helps in some way

Dean

I only meant that I moved the library folders (Downloads, My Documents, My Pictures, etc.) - I did nothing with any other user information.  Moving those folders was done by opening a Windows Explorer window, then right-clicking on each of the folders for my user, in the right pane of the Windows Explorer, then clicking on Properties, then clicking on Location and pointing each folder to my other disk drive.

Sorry if any earlier post confused anyone.

Sorry Bob, I was replying directly to OP and not your post. What you suggest sounds excactly like what I was trying to get across, just in another way.

Thanks

A word of caution about junctions : I'd stay away from them if you're using a non-english version of Windows. Windows does it's language thing through junctions and my french version has hundreds of junctions all over the place. I found that out when I tried myself to move things around without windows knowing about it.

As for partitions, I love 'em. I actually ran out of drive letters yesterday when I temporarily added an external drive that itself had a bunch of partitions. Found out that if a drive/partition doesn't have a letter, it doesn't show up...

How to fix this annoying issue?

When you change the location of an "account" you are changing the address of the associated data on the drive system. Unless you then tell all of the dependent programs where you have moved the information they expect to find at the old location, they are lost. Your "little program" apparently did not do that for you. You could spend a lot of time figuring out where everything should be, changing registry entries etc. You could try to fool the system into thinking that nothing has changed with shortcuts and links, etc. But unless you want to spend a great deal of time and effort, the simplest fix might be to reinstall the programs that no longer work. The best time to make changes to the location of user accounts is before you install anything to the OS.

If you want to try to salvage your current installation, there are some hints that might be helpful here:

You forget there is only one registry. You can create as many user accounts as you wish but programs like Sonar rely on the registry to run. Moving an account to another partition is going to cause problems with registry entries.

Partitioning can only be beneficial if:

A. You have a decent understand of what you are doing;

B. You have a strategy;

C. You don't forget which sets of files you've moved.

Will try a re-install today, doubt it will work, un-installing will never remove certain registry settings

You need to manually remove a couple of important registry keys before attempting to reinstall.

Here's the full procedure:

1) Completely un-install SONAR from your computer. This is normally done from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. This will not remove any of your project files or audio data.

2) Open the Run Command
In Windows Vista and 7 this can be done by holding down the ‘windows’ key and pressing ‘r’

3) At the prompt type regedit and click OK.

***Backup your Registry before making edits - you do this by clicking the File menu, Export Registry File.   ***

4) Now delete the following Registry keys:
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X2
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X2

NOTE  that this will remove any effects presets and key bindings you may have made in Cakewalk. You can back these up separately if you like, using Options|Key Bindings, Tools|SONAR Plug-in Manager, and Options|Colors. Hit F1 in these views for detailed instructions on how to do this.

5) Open the 'Run' command again.

6) Copy and paste the following into the prompt:   %appdata%\Cakewalk

7) This will open your Cakewalk Application Data folder, right-click on the SONAR folder and choose rename.
8) Rename this folder SONAR X2 Backup.

9) Open the 'Run' command again and type msconfig Click OK and then click on the Startup tab at the upper right of the window that opens.

10) Uncheck all items listed, click OK, then restart your computer. You can always recheck those items again at a later time.

11) Then reinstall SONAR. Make sure to have any virus scanners disabled on installation. It is not required or recommended to turn off any windows services.
