• SONAR
  • user accounts on another partition, sonar won't run (p.3)

@Bristol_Jonesey - you are freaking me out, man! :)

I JUST 2 minutes ago pasted those very same instructions into someone else's thread (with a shout to you for creating them), and I was going to do the same thing again here.

Nicely done - those are pretty well written.

NOW, on to other pieces of this situation:

I ran an experiment where I changed the Location information for a brand new standard user account that I set up, then started Sonar under that user.  Sonar runs just FINE in that manner.

That leads me to believe that whatever 'little program' you ran to accomplish this has messed things up.

At this point, is Sonar running properly under the admin user?  If not, then I think Windows is likely messed up in some fashion, although it could be Sonar, I suppose (but not likely).

For an experiment, please set up a new standard user, and then while logged on as that user, see if Sonar will run.  If it does, that's a good sign - it means you have a functioning Sonar, and that Windows is happy with the new user's internal structure and such.

So, if the above worked, THIS time, do NOT use that little program you used, but instead use what is already built into Windows to allow you to relocate user folders.

To move user folders:

1.  Start Windows Explorer
2.  Do these steps for all of your user folders (Downloads, Desktop, My Documents, etc.) for the account you want to do this for.
3.  Right-click on one of the folders (in the right pane of Windows Explorer), and then click on Properties, then on Location.
4.  Change the location to wherever you want the folder moved to.
5.  Do this for all user folders for this account, or whichever of the folders you want to move.

There is no special program needed for any of this.  I am wondering why you want to relocate everything - this is a new user account you indicated that you had set up - since there would not be any giant bunch of user data for this new user, why do you feel you need to move its unused folders to another location on your computer?

You could just make sure your samples and projects live somewhere other than with the OS.

That is generally good advice, and is simple and the most reliable method if all you need to do is to move most of the data that Windows stupidly puts on your system drive. It is not the same as moving the user directory/accounts/folders off the system drive however. It will not allow you to move the hidden AppData folder for example, which if you are trying to avoid the OP's problem in the first place is probably a good idea.

It is possible to move the entire user folder system off the system drive, and I suspect that this may be what happened to the OP. If you moved the entire user directory to another partition and were still able to start Sonar, then it may be that the OP has an additional problem. In that case it is possible that some Sonar dependencies (plugins?) unique to his installation but necessary to start Sonar have not been updated to connect to their respective applications.

I concur - I believe the OP should use whatever means needed to get Windows back to its merry old self, and then just create the new standard user without trying to move any files/folders around - since they wouldn't really see any use.

That might require a complete re-install of Windows, since I have no idea of what was done to the system specifically, in the use of that 'little program'.

FunkLoop
1. did a reinstall
2. moved the user folders as described in this topic
3. installed sonar 7

everything works fine right now

you have to reset all to folder security permission with the method recommended in this thread
