How about Independence Free? I haven't tried it but it seems like it might be the VST equivalent to Structure Free in Pro Tools. I used that a lot, you just drag audio clips over to it and it automatically maps them to your keyboard. From the blurb, Independence Free says you can work with up to 25 audio files which is a limitation, but you can always upgrade to the full version for $65 which I presume has no such limitation.

Sharke, will it map a chopped sample similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1-vDTsmN9M

I don't know, why not try the free version? It touts itself as a quick way to create instruments from samples, so I'd be very surprised if you can't just drag sliced clips into it like you can with Groove Agent or Structure.

downloading the demo. Think i tried it years ago and it is more along the lines if a sample player like dim pro than full fledged sampler but it's worth a try. Sucks that Poise is only 32-bit or it would be a good low-cost MPC styler solution

DubDisciple, how did Independent stack up? That Cubase video was straightforward and thats what I was looking for with sampling in Sonar.

I'd be pretty willing to buy a new software sampler if it can do this function which I am requesting. I'm not looking for the most feature packed/complicated. Just a function similar to the Exs 24 at a price point perhaps. I'm not looking for libraries and libraries of sounds either.

Do Native Instrument's kontakt or Fxpansion Geist have any tutorial videos showing how to do this easily? Maybe a just a write up on how to?
I have to say I love Sonar for its learning curve and being somewhat similar in nature to Logic. But this one thing is very important to me in how I made music, and really distracts me from all that is good with Sonar. Maybe I shouldn't be so fixated. Thank you all for the replies. I was guess and checking how to do this in Sonar myself, and it wasn't working out.

Hey hmtawil,
If you own X2 Producer version, you can get the 30 day free All Access Pass to the Groove3 video tuts (fairly extensive list for Kontakt explained there by the way).  Just checked some of them & it looks like maybe what you want.  The link is in the sticky list at top of forum.
Best,

Hi hmtawil !

I know what you mean with Logic and EXS24, this is one awesome feature of logic, to be able to transfer any audio to a sampler channel easily.

There are no way of doing this as effectively in Sonar, maybe with Beatscape? or even the matrix ?

Otherwise, I would take a look at either NI Battery, or Kontakt.

Cheers !

So far i have not been having much luck. if it is possible, it is not intuitive and certainly not easy. With geist, I suspect this is exactly what you are looking for as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwAHIDicQ3k. Groove agent used to be sold as a plugin on it's own. I know there is a new version of groove agent being released soon that may solve your problem instead of resorting to workarounds. I wanted to use groove agent as a plugin in sonar but unfortunately it is a vst3 plugin and ...well (insert vst3 complaint thread here).

Actually Battery sounds like a good idea, it's so easy to drag samples into the cells and map them to keys. Don't know why I didn't think of this before.
