Nice Craig. I really like the modern elements you added to the arrangement. I'm pretty sure we'll all survive the fact that you posted it here. And I hope we all survive the massive customer crisis going on. You know, the one on the forum that usually has a few dozen people visiting at any one time. ;)

The newest music on there, "Unpleasable" and "Ambient Rose," were both done with X2a and the production/mixing process was trouble-free.

About the negativity...I really hate to sound like a "Gee, it works for me, what's your problem?" type of person, although Sonar really has been very reliable/stable in my studio. I know there are frustrated, savvy people with real problems in addition to some who have only themselves to blame for their difficulties.

I think there is a MUCH larger issue at hand here. The problems people experience with Sonar are not unique to Sonar; just check out other forums. Another example: people talk about how RME's drivers are rock-solid, but go to their forums and you'll see threads like "CLICKS AND POPS WITH ADAT INPUT! HELP!!"

In my view, the problem is simply that the complexity of the technology has outstripped the ability of software developers to cope with it. I think you'll see more people opting for systems like Rain Computing's Rain Pak, which is a computer "ecosystem" geared to specific software, and backed by extensive support.

Anyway, back to the music! Do check out "Unpleasable" too, it seems kind of relevant right now...

Thanks for stopping by during this Cakewalk Customer Crisis.

I'm glad you showed off some of your work using X2a - at least we know it's working for you, and you of all people probably put it through its paces.

Though, I find it a little troublesome that it appears that X2 is apparently so complex that it may well require a specific hardware platform - this is sort of like the PC gamers giving up and moving to a dedicated system.

I suppose it is the natural progression of things, (although it seems that Sonar is a little more finicky that other programs).  From purely a computer standpoint, it must be easier to write software for a Mac, where there are less variables.
what? "A specific harware platform"?
im using an external soundcard and it doesnt seem to complex for me?

"at least we know it works"?
I personaly need no validation, i know it works,so who is this "WE" ?

im not sure what you mean by "cakewalk crisis" either.
your using Sonar homestudio 6 but yet you still keep dropping these comments about X2 and its crisis.
untill youve actually installed X2 and can comment on facts, than anything you say is hypothetical.
if your going to comment on the things youve read than why are you only commenting on the negetive views.
there are a lot of positive reviews on this forum as well yet you seem to focus only on the later.

im confused.

It was never my intention to confuse...

"specific hardware platform" ==> This was a response to Craig's comment about the eventuality of running DAW software on hardware which is optimized for audio, eg.  the Rain computers he mentioned.  The next logical step would be closed proprietary systems as opposed to commodity systems.  Hence the comparision of PC gamers moving to dedicated systems.

"I personaly need no validation, i know it works,so who is this "WE" ? " ==> I couldn't be happier for you.  "WE" refers to those of us who are waiting for X2 to be widely considered to be stable, able to open and run projects created on previous versions, no funny inexplicable behavior,  etc. before we fork over any money to upgrade.

I use X1d Expanded.  Please re-read my other posts concerning HS6 running on W7.

I rely on the experience of others on the forum to determine when and if I will upgrade to X2.  To upgrade to an initial release of a new version of software is a total leap of faith for those with lots of disposable time and income.

I don't need to own X2 to comment on other's misfortunes.  Should I focus on only the positive X2 comments and ignore the posts of users who have thousands of forum posts and appear to be having genuine problems?

How long did you use Mixcraft before you started commenting on it?  I bet you could make the same music in Mixcraft that you do in X2.

"Cakewalk Customer Crisis" ==>  Alliteration.  Levity.

I respect and admire Craig a great deal.  I suspect he swung by to put things at ease because it has been pretty heated around here.  Some long-time forum folks even said they were hesitant to post.  Oh, and btw - I'll take Craig's advice over just about anybody else.  I've been following him for 30 years and he's no fanboi and uses a multitude of tools (including Mixcraft).  Who better to compare the tools which are out there.  Although he's not perfect - he doesn't use Staff View that much.

Please, keep the questions coming.

"We've already cleared up how to make the VX-64 sound less murky" Sorry, can't reply to posts directly. For some reason firefox overrode my 'do not update' checkbox and updated 3.6 to the latest version without asking me. Now I can't do anything on the forum. Sorry, no line breaks. I've always noticed that about the VX-64 plugin. I mentioned it a long time ago. You especially hear that muddiness when you use the de-esser. I still use it for the de-esser but use another plug-in after it called Up-Stereo. The 'Air' knob in it works wonders. I'm still seeing the problem with it setting the delay to 1 second and overriding your settings sometimes. It happens when you adjust it, save the project, close it, and reopen it at a later time. I always freeze the tracks I put it on right away now. If you know of a work around for that, it would be great. I tried to save the settings as a preset and it didn't help.

Well ... actually, I stopped using the delay in it completely because of that 1 second delay problem. But it would be nice if it worked. It's a nice VST.

Please, keep the questions coming.

You suspect correctly. I was also motivated by the response the song got in another forum. The video was not intended to be an instructional video; as I said in the beginning I thought y'all might find it entertaining, and possibly spur some discussion. (In the video I did for the song "Little Pieces," it was all screen captures from Ozone 5's spectrum analyzer...it just makes music look so cool!)

I apologize if anyone thinks posting a link to this particular music video was out of line, but I did check with Cakewalk first. I don't think anyone has ever done a music video solely with shots from the program used to create the music, let alone Sonar, and that's why I linked to that particular song (which I posted some time ago) - I figured Sonar users would dig the recognition of Sonar's eye candy elements. "DAW as performance art" LOL

And finally...thanks very much for the various compliments about the videos and my other work. I really do put a lot of effort into these projects, because the reality is people like YOU are my "boss" and I want the boss to be happy with my work. If what I do meets with your approval, it's because you are the people who inspire me to try and meet those standards. It's an interaction, I don't work in isolation.

I have to admit that for some of the Advanced Workshop chapters, I couldn't help but think "Would FBB find this helpful?" or "Would someone in the forums find this useful enough to comment on?" and that's the kind of lens through which I did many of the scripts.

I always find your videos helpful Craig. I learn from them as I do from this forum which IMHO is one of Sonar's greatest assets. I don't think one ever stops learning no matter how much one already knows. It'd be a sad day for me if I thought I knew everything.

Please carry on sharing & teaching... I for one am all ears.

I must admit that when I saw the video I had some high hopes that you were working on something that would be available in the Cakewake store soon. The advanced tips and tricks in your first two cakewalk videos were great! They were well worth the money. I found them to contain very valuable information. From time to time I still refer to those tips even though they were made for X1. The information itself is not outdated.

If you are working on something then maybe it is secret, I just want you to know I would be open to any new product you put on the table.

If you would have put that video link in the song forum then I would have missed it. I am glad I was able to catch it and see it. At least I know some of the potential of hyper cam. The zoom feature looks great.
