Thanks for that reply Craig I really do appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I also believe that much stuff in future will be increasing tied to platform specific solutions.  That's just the unavoidable groundswell of how things are headed.  It may even be a good thing in the long run, stuff no longer becomes prey to piracy and user can actually return hardware that doesn't work so it may be a better solution for both devs and end users alike all round.

The two (or three?) exceptions you mention there are the product of policy which shows that there is still mileage in desktop DAWs.  So it isn't down to the idea that it's too difficult do these days but it needs a strong vision (the word you used WRT to S1 V2) and will to pull it off.

Neither of those qualities am I currently seeing from this company presently, which is basically all I'm trying to say.  It's not that it's too difficult because we both know it can be and is being done already.

Hi Craig,

Can't listen to this right now, on my DAW and I have all Windows Sound services disabled.

There is a Song forum here just so you know ... this isn't really the place to post this.

;)

forum police always around the corner to try and control our use of the forum
great job buddy im listen to it now,
bud this post was a nice change from the ,your sonar is better than my sonar, i read here everyday
just let it go man, does it realy matter wher is posted it.
cus guess what all the folks who have a clue on how to mix master and record dont spend there time placing a post .
if its in the wrong place the mods can move it, they get payed to police the forum, and you care why??
this forum years ago was a blessing now its full of show offs and fanboy  crybaby's

calling him a crybaby make you feel any better ?
youve had your share of problems here with sonar on the forum.
people have called you a crybaby and its not right, is it ?
how does that make you feel?

probably the same way your trying to make bub feel.

weather or not you struggle to get along with others is your business but personal attacks
are just uncalled for and in my opinion are the low point of this forum no one wants to hear.

you can go ahead now and call me some name as well.

Hi,just watched the vid for the first time now, great job,and a really interesting/good arrangement.

One thing,how does one go about posting "cover versions"on you tube? I ask because I have a simple cover I've done on soundcloud,but I'm wary,of posting on youtube,as I don't know about[and I don't have the video component yet!]the song writing royalties/issues.
Cheers
Bob

PS,I just realised the answer is in your intro/description to the song on youtube.

Finally, as to the video not being MTV-friendly, that's a given. I mostly do "lyric videos" because after all, I'm posting the stuff on YouTube, so there needs to be some kind of visual component. I did the "Sonar video" for fun; people will either like the music or not, so the video is more like the bonus track on a CD. In this particular case and my posting the link here, I simply thought that people who use Sonar would get a kick out of seeing it used as the sole element in a video, and also, that it might serve as a springboard for discussion, like picking up on the "wrong" use of compression. And yes, automating a kick drum the way I did is kind of "not normal"

He he, not MTV Friendly - sorry about that, I was just being snarky I did mean to say I found it quite educational.

I asked Mike what he meant about the automation because I do the same as you all the time. Depending on genre I usually have simmilar volume automation done to kick (maybe not that much), bass, snare and some melody elements. And I always add loads of automation to vocals and in particular, dialogue for movie or TV. I mean, it looks like the faders have parkinson when I'm done If it's normal or not, I don't care as long as it sounds good.

As for the lisencing Youtube topic. I'm keen to see an article or a discussion around this as well where it can be read/participated in without distraction. I have a million questions on this topic. Especially now I'm being bombarded with e-mails from them about music in videos I've posted that I made my self or when music I've lisenced out or somehow still get royalties for are posted by my clients or associates.

Anyway, good post there Mr. Anderton - as always, highly informative. BTW - nice work on those track icons in the video.

OK, signing off now

Yes, and a vague answer it is indeed. Also, it's my understanding that YouTube operates under a "three strikes" kind of rule where if they have to take down copyrighted material three times, you can have your account suspended. So, the advice to "post it and see if they take it down" seems kind of...well, at least it was a better answer than I got from YouTube.

I'd suggest searching on material by the same artist and if there are numerous examples dating back years, it's probably okay otherwise I assume it would have been taken down. Or not. Or maybe.

I also assume (as Herman Cain would say, "I don't have the facts to back me up") the thinking goes something like this:

1. The individual posting the video isn't benefiting commercially from it, so they don't have any income from it to share; and, it promotes the artist being covered. But...
2. YouTube makes money because people post stuff that other people want to see, so they go to YouTube, and YouTube benefits commercially. So...
3.YouTube needs to pony up some of that money to the people responsible for the material that helped make their site more successful.

Hey, it's as good a guess as any.

Thanks,it's certainly very cool to  get an answer, straight from the guy who made the music and video in the first place!

I'm fairly amazed how vague the whole licensing scenario is though,it kind of paralells the loss of income, from recorded music,in general,to me.

I totally dug the NAMM "MIDI"gig,I'm so glad "childanny" posted it,or I may not have known it existed[especially only being a guitar player myself
All the way down in "Straya"
Regards
Bob

@ Craig

I think it is wonderful that you post here. There are a lot of people here who are very knowledgeable and truley do enjoy helping others. I have found that generally the more knowledgable you are in a given field the more you tend to give of it to others who are learning. an idea that we should all try to emulate!

I too have boughten your video's (as well as FBB and others) in the past and have still to this day re watch and re learn things I have either forgotten, missed or not understood at that point...so plese do continue.

To your video here...I have no issue with where you have posted it.....your intention was to share and by sharing you are still teaching....for instance:
I found it interesting to see all the automation that you have in the tracks,
the metering you are producing your tracks at.
The amount of doubled instrumentation and their equal panning positions
the plugs you used
the sugrcal cutting of the audio tracks into specific clips
and the Pro channel work

for just a few items to mention....like they say, pictures are worth a thousand words....

@ this tune (since I am a product of the 60's and 70's)
I do like the way you kept the integrity of the composition
However I do love the new elements you have brough into it such as the creative use of Damage
I do like your bkgd vox
your choice of instrumentation
your presentation
the clean mix
the tempo
and the over all control of your use of plugs and effects

My ONLY dislike and it is "MY" opinion only:
I think I would have to agree with one of the opening responses that I did not really enjoy the "Sound" of the lead vox...it had too much verb or room sound for "my" liking.........but then again if you ever hear "MY" singing I think you would prefer to hear a cat screech instead.....so I really should not comment here...

Anyway please continue to share with us be cause we all can learn and
thank you

Clifford

Nice song, nice version and interesting video - not in an MTV way (does mtv even play music videos anymore?) but it is always nice to see how others are working.

I guess you are like me - old enough to remember the fairly limited abilities of analog in comparison to digital editing/mixing.  Sometimes I wonder how any daw works, considering what one can do.  And I never learned to type on my Otari.
