I know this is not a Sonar specific related question however I have seen many tutorials and the very cool video Craig made. What is the software used to capture the "screen video"  to make such videos etc? I would like to do similar. :)

There are a number of applications available but TechSmith Camtasia is the best.

Thanks garrigus!  Unfortunatly, it is $300. Any other less expensive options you might recommend? I am totally new to video, never done anything related to video.

a few options , there is a free one cam studio

http://camstudio.org/

but there is also 1 built into corel video studio x5.. I just bought mine for £50 ish ($100) boxed off ebay from a legit seller.

I would suggest look on your local ebay for a start.. but make sure it's boxed etc. and obv. at a "none silly" price, that seems suss..  reason I bought it there is it was cheaper than the download version direct from corel

Thanks guys!! I think I will start with the free one and do a couple of vids, see how it goes, see what it takes etc, then spend some money if I think I will be doing lots of it.  Awesome!

Look out youtube!!!!!!!  LOL!!

Camstudio is pretty good especially with some of the freeware zoom utilities available.

I've also used BSR which is pretty good for a cheap one and in respect of recording audio IMHO better than Camtasia which for me at least point blank refuses to capture at 48 kHz.

I agree with Scott though, Camtasia is way in front of the others for features especially editing - as it should be given the price. V8 has settled down now as well after several updates.

Anyone who thinks Sonar new releases are buggy should try Techsmith. Camtasia was crashing two or three times per session when I was making the X2 video.

I use Hypercam. It's basic, functional, free, and stable. All the editing happens in Vegas. It's a little tricky to figure out how to capture audio into Hypercam, I need to use two interfaces and patch them together with cables. Hypercam uses WDM on one interface, Sonar uses ASIO on the other. There are ways to use a single interface, but I find that ultimately, the dual interface option is more straightforward.

For the videos, I actually had to write out instructions on how to set the audio in Vegas, Hypercam, the interfaces, and the Windows control panel. Before doing any videos, I go trough the checklist as all the variables need to be set up correctly.

I had the same issue with CamStudio.  To make things worse my computer is in another room, behind a wall.  I could not get the program to except audio from my soundcard.

What i do is run a digital video camera, dump the file into Vegas and use the audio from the camera.   I ve been creating tutorials for a class I teach.  It gives you a 2 camera shoot.

IIRC BSR would re-route audio to record from Sonar using some sort of internal loop back I think. I managed to get CamStudio to do that too but can't for the life of me remember how.

With Camtasia I use a separate interface (Roland Sonic Cell) which I monitor via my main interface (A&H ZED-R16). It works really well like that but it does need the two interfaces.

If anyone knows how to get Camtasia to record at 48 kHz please PM me with the secret, it won't work for me, even with the audio option set to that.

interesting both of you have issues with recording.. I'd have tried WDM or MME really.. errm also check your windows "default" hardware device  isn't messing with the recording rather perhaps ?

or when switching between apps again.. if the bit depth is changed that might be faffing it up

in your windows recording properties you'll find an "advanced" section.. and under there you should able to get 48k
also.. if it's set at 44.1 then yer i might be tripping it up. there is also other "record what you hear" options in that device manager bit .. again that depends on the soundcard itself.. I guess someone who writes drivers for soundcards would give you a far better view (not that I'm unsubtly hint or nowt :) )

p.s. karl.. if that works.. I want ya next sonar vid free..haha
