Guys I know this is an elementary problem ... but I just don't seem to be able to solve it.

I record MIDI drums using EZDrummer onto a track.

Then I go to record electric guitar on track 2. I arm the track and hit record. The problem is that the drums on track one plus the metronome are being recorded onto track 2 along with the guitar.

I can obviously disable input monitoring on playback through preferences - but I can't disable it during recording itself. I don't think I've had this problem before - Lord knows why it's decided to play up today. The track input echo buttons don't seem to make any difference either. On my soundcard, ASIO direct monitoring is disabled.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

What are your signal chain settings? Describe whats going where and how. Are you sure your not using the onboard sound card and have the "what you hear' enabled??

Here is a thread that was just posted that may have your answer also

Is it possible your pick ups are recording what your hearing as well? I noticed once while trying to get a good feedback going. My solution was to hear the mix in the headphones and only the guitar came through the speakers.

I'm a bit confused here. If I record a MIDI track and wanted to convert it to audio for mixdown, then I'd WANT this to happen. You would arm the audio track, hit record and record the MIDI track onto the audio track.

But in this case I DON'T want the MIDI track recording onto the audio track. So what enables/disables this process?

Thanks

This must be related to your interface settings.

Have you verified what CJ suggested? i.e. you're using your 2496 & not the onboard chip?

I'm definitely using the 2496. Onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS and all sound settings on my PC are pointing to the the 2496. This really is quite bizarre!

Ordinarily that shouldn't work. The fact that it does indicates you have an output routed to an input. You can't do this within Sonar.
When you record a MIDI track to audio, what is the audio track input?
If it's WavOut1/2, that is essentially "what you hear".
This is generaly not advised, because it invites just what you are experiencing.
It's better to bounce to track.

What is the input of the audio track you are trying to record now?

Are you sending the output from the 2496 to the MG12/4?
If so, make sure that isn't being routed back to your input buss in the mixer.
