• SONAR
  • Steadily, gradually raise pitch - EDM

If I have a softsynth that I want to tweak so, say a G note that is playing for 4 measures straight gradually raises in pitch (think elctronic dance music build up), is the best way to go about that to find a pitch altering vst with automation write capabilites and put it in the effects bin and automate the pitch raise? Will that actually work?

If so, any recommendations on what vst to use for this?

Ableton Live makes it really easy to change pitch with an envelope, but in sonar, I think I need to use a vst plugin and write that automation in the output track in order to get the same results.

Thank you!

Is this audio or midi?

For midi I'd use the pitch bend Wheel.

For Audio- V-Vocal, or CW Pitch Shifter + automation.

Whats wrong with pitch bend?

And there is Portamento to consider too...

Pitch bend and portamento isnt going to be as good to work with. It is easier to work with an envelope on the output track like ableton.

I can make a perfect envelope slow really easy instead of messing with all the pitch bend nodes or messing with portamento.

I'm a little confused.  Can you not assign an automation lane to pitch wheel / synth pitch control and draw in an envelope - in this case a line slowly rising?  I haven't done that with a pitch wheel, but I have done it using pitch control in sample cell.  I think you will have more joy with changing the master oscillator of the sound generator than trying to apply a pitch change algorithm to the output

I will try with a midi envelope and see how it goes.

Dimension Pro and Rapture (and maybe Rapture LE too) have pitch envelopes.

Many of the patches you come across in Dim Pro/Rapture etc will have their pitch bend range defaulting to 2 semitones. If you want more than this you'll have to edit the patch.

Just something to be aware of.

yeah I know, which is a pain.

In Ableton, You can put an envelope on the track and just pitch bend away, no VST settings to mess with etc., which led me to believe that it was altering the audio, not the midi data.

It works awesome in Ableton, but I like to work in Sonar.

That is why my clever little mind though, hmm, a VST plugin pitch bender in the audio output track for a synth and automate the pitch alterations maybe.
