One of our kind forum members (sidroe) just mentioned the Kontakt 5 free thingy in another thread. I'm wondering since I have Producer with all the bells and whistles (upgrade from the X1 Suite) whether it's going to add much to my current slew of synths/libraries.

Right on. I hear a lot about it on here but didn't realize there was a freebie. Thought maybe it was just a demo or it would just be poorer quality duplication of what I already have in Sonar. I usually try to avoid installing free stuff but it's NI so I guess it's safe.

The player may be free but I don't think it has much value without the accompanying sample libraries. Many of the libraries provide the player.

It is pretty good and worth having.  Just be warned a lot of the free/cheap libraries won't play or switch to demo mode w/ the player since they don't pay a licence to NI.

The good news is most of the pay products will - so you can pick and choose your sounds.  I got some Heavocity libs on sale and they, of course, work fine.

Hmm... so does it come with ANY sounds? That's the thing... It's obviously kind of useless to me without any usable samples and I have other stuff to buy before I can think about stuff like this.

Cheers.

UPDATE: The free factory content is right there with the player download:

NI offers some free content for the free player.  In the free content are good basses, a good rhodes, a clav, a solid drum kit, and quite a few other things.

Sorry I can't find the link for the free stuff, but I posted it on another thread.  If you crawl NI's site you will it.

A lot of good libraries (like Vir 2) use the free player.

Re: the full player:
I just cross-graded to the full Kontakt 5 and got the full sample content (1,000+ insturments).  It is great but didn't do much for me since I already had Vienna, Hollywood, Ivory 2, RealGuitar, RealStrat, RealLPC, Acoustic Legends, Electri6ity, and other stuff.  However, if you don't have a big sample library, the full Kontakt 5 is a great deal.

I got it (the free version) fairly recently as I was following a tutorial in Computer Music magazine that involved a freebie guitar thingy that needed Kontakt. Anyhoo...
One thing I've found that bugs me is loading a project with Kontakt in it won't work as Kontakt times out despite being registered/authorised. I then have to load a fresh one, find the preset and move the midi. This is not the way forward nor is it very clever .

Grum.
