Ok,

I don't know what the deal is....maybe X2's scan algorithm...but it takes FOREVER
to scan the VST's...

In Cubase....it's done in a few seconds...

With X2...I have to wait about 5 minutes before it's done...

Just sayin'
Not hatin'...just an observation..

Time is money...or, in my case, lack thereof...

Make sure you are only scanning for new plug ins. FWIW, Reaper seems longer to me.

I turn off scanning altogether and only switch it on briefly after a plugin installation. Defragged your hard drive recently?

You only have to scan them when your adding a new one so you're choosing to waste time.

And how many are you scanning? Perhaps you need to clean up. I got rid of a bunch of junky plug-ins that I never used and Sonar has run a lot better since. Don't be a VST hoarder!

Right.
The default is to scan on startup, but there is no need to do that every time. X2 already knows where they are.
To turn it off, go to Preferences>VST Settings.
Uncheck Scan For VST Plugins On Startup.
Hit Apply.
Now you have 5 more minutes to hang out in the Coffee House.

Just because you have a fast sportscar doesn't mean you know how to drive it.  Good luck with that!

Hey cclarry . . . something's not right about your set-up, though your great computer Specs don't reflect it . . .
my VST scan is set to scan every time Sonar starts up, and it takes moments . . .

You must have a lot of plugins to scan. So, why not set preferences to just scan whenever you add another new  plugin ?

I recall reading a post from one the cake reps who suggested we leave scan vsts on at startup with X1 and X2. Supposed to handle them faster now. I do and it's a mere few seconds to get X2 going here...

FYI only the top-most box in the VST Scan page in SONAR's properties should be checked. THe other two should only be checked when re-scanning VSTs due to an error or other general wonkiness. For day to day use just leave the top box checked. SONAR now only looks for new plugins with that box checked and does not scan the entire VST library. It enumerates VSTs internally and know what is already there.

HTH.
