I can add it to the controller surface dialog, but it doesn't do anything. It had worked with X1 and Windows 7. Any advice? Frontier Design's website gives the impression of a ghost town -- no driver updates for awhile.

If this product no longer works with this software, any thoughts on a low cost replacement? The Behringer control surface with faders looks promising at about $250. Really just looking for something for mixing down, fading one track up while another down and so on.

You need to install the driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode then it will work in Windows 8. Be aware that it won't do the ProChannel EQ properly. Frontier Design never updated it beyond Sonar 8 Sonitus EQ.

it work fine for me. Select the input and output devices under preferences > midi > devices and click APPLY.

Next, click Controller and surfaces and set both the In Port and Out Port on the device. and click APPLY.

The AT is working fine for me with Win 7 x64 and Sonar X2a.  What are you using x86 or x64?  If your using x64 did you install the AlphaTrack.dll  in the C:\Programs\Cakewalk\Shared Surfaces folder?  If not do this first and then install the AT via Sonar Preferences\Midi\Control Surfaces.
