automate controller data to tempo?...like say I wanted to cycle the pitch bend/mod wheel so that it is open on beat 1 and closed on beat two, open on beat 3, closed on 4, etc.
 
I can do it manually, but it is never consistent when I'm trying to be repetative.  I'd love to be able to insert a sine wave that is tempo based.

Yes... you can draw to sign waves to tempo. Show the Tools menu in the control bar. Click and hold on the pencil tool and choose SIGN for the type... Add your envelope you want to automate to the track.... then... click and drag moving your mouse off the line and the wave form will draw in. Hold down ctrl to make it repeat more slowly. I believe it follows snap settings. holding ctrl doubles the snap setting.

You can do that by manually drawing in automation envelopes with the Draw tool. It provides a number of predefined shapes (including sine). Right-click the Draw tool in the Tool module of the Control Bar and choose Sine.

Then set the Snap Resolution to the cycles that you want. Meaning, if you want one cycle of the sine wave to be completed for every quarter note, then choose 1/4 for the Snap Resolution.

Then add a envelope to the track and click near the middle of the track and hold the mouse button. Then move your mouse to the top of the track and drag to the right so that you get the full cycle going up/down the entire width of the track.

That should create the automation that you're looking for, if I understand your question correctly.

You can also do it using "input quantize" (MIDI track tab in the Inspector) where you can set the resolution required and record it in real time.

Of course how successful that is will depend on the quantize settings and how accurate your actions at record time are.

I was able to come close to getting the effect I want using the cakewalk mod-filter but I couldn't quite get it to sync.  I'm thinking automation is the way to go.

btw - @Scott - Heading out to fish the Provo river today. Just got a foot of snow here in Utah, but I've had great luck with dry flies when it is snowing. Don't know if it's the same where you are at... Midges are supposed to be hatching more as it gets closer to Feb.

Hey Vernon... nice! Sounds like some fun. I don't usually do much fishing in the Winter though. I really hate the cold weather. I'll be out in the Spring, Summer, and Fall though.
