• SONAR
  • Soft synths won't record...

Hello I've run into an issue with X2A.

I've got 3 soft synths and a number of audio tracks.
* Octapad USB MIDI OUT Channel 10 - Session Drummer 3
* Keyboard 1 USB MIDI OUT Channel 1- Dimension Pro 1
* Keyboard 2 USB MIDI OUT Channel 2 - Dimension Pro 2

All are playing perfectly on seperate MIDI channels.
All tracks have echo and record on.

So I press record this is what happens...

* I can hear all the software synths and audio tracks. - OK
* The record button does not show red - Huh?
* The waveforms graphics don't appear on the track view whilst playing for any tracks - Huh?

Then this is what happens when I stop and play back what I've recorded:

* The waveforms graphics now appear for the audio tracks and I can hear the audio tracks - OK
* The soft synth does not get recorded at all (no waveforms graphics displayed, nothing recorded) - Huh?

Is this a schoolboy error?
Why won't my soft-synths record and why won't the record button display?

NB I have rebooted the PC and switched all the synths on and off. They are all running on the right MIDI channels.

The strange thing is I can create a brand new project and set it all up and it works and plays back/records fine. But I still want to know if there's anything I might have done in the previous projects to cause this.

Cheers

Alex

You need to arm the tracks first.

Next, the recording will be in MIDI... not audio so you will not see any wave forms as you record.

your post is a bit confusing to me.... first you say you can't record.... then you say you can play it back just fine... huh?

Please follow the steps carefully. What I've written is exactly what happens believe it or not.

As stated "All tracks have echo and record on" so they are armed.
As stated with new projects no issue (i.e. I generally know what I'm doing).
The issue is specifically to do with soft synths not recording and the record button not showing as a red colour whilst recording. It's recording though, just recording audio tracks.

"OK" means working
"HUH?" means WTF?
When I say "The record button does not show red" I mean the main recording button (not track record enable)... maybe this was unclear.

Yes this issue is weird!!! I'm guessing the project template got corrupted somehow.... but then again? Any ideas?

Thanks :).

By chance, is the option checked or unchecked to tell Sonar to display waveform while recording?

Edit > Preferences > Customization - Display Waveform Preview While Recording check box.

And for the midi tracks, there are no events captured if you look in event list?

Just curious.

It does seem a bit odd - perhaps that project did get haunted, if the exact same setup works in a new project.

What I'm not sure from reading the thread is, are you recording midi track ? or audio track ?

For example, if I insert simple instrument soft synt, I would not see an audio track, as only midi information gets recorded..

You can't record audio from a softsynth. You have to record midi, then bounce/freeze each track.

I did some random synt insert :

uncheck simple instrument track
uncheck midi source
check synth track folder
check first synt audio output
..the rest i'm not sure..

And I get a soft synth track that I can arm, but can never get it to record. Pressing 'r' or clicking on transport record simply did nothing.

What is working for me is :

So, either you need to check on simple instrument track, or if this is not checked, you need to check midi source - and if you check on midi source, the record to arm is the 'inside' midi track, not the track folder record.

I think its the terms used that is throwing people off. You don't record a soft synth. You record MIDI. When you arm a MIDI track for recording you are not arming a soft synth. Just the track. The track should be set to output to a MIDI port or a soft synth input.

If you use a multi out synth set it so that the MIDI input from a MIDI track is going to the proper channel and that the audio is going to the proper out of the synth.

No audio is recorded unless you are using a hardware synth and audio from it is being sent to an audio track and you have that track record enabled and armed when you start to record.

The above may be known or not I don't know but by reading the post it appears that it isn't. MIDI is an alien concept to people especially if they are coming from an audio background.

To all - Alex is recording multiple tracks at the same time - some are audio, and 2 are midi.

He is not seeing audio waveform data on the audio tracks until after he stops the recording process.

He is not getting any recorded midi data.

The transport bar Record button is also not turning red when he hits record either.

The above behavior is only happening for this one project.
