Can someone define what the differences are between X2 Studio and X2 Producer?  The online detailed comparison doesn't really say much and it looks like Studio and Producer are identical?

Thanks, Rob.

They are identical except that Studio has fewer features. Cakewalk has a PDF comparison chart file here that lists all the features for each edition...

The big difference is the Producer has Pro Channel. In the past the real difference was more plugins bundled with Producer and perhaps a few added features but now PC makes it a whole "nother" DAW. Pro Channel is more than worth the price difference.

Studio is OK but Producer is the DAW to get.

It depends on how many plug-in's and synths/virtual instruments you already have.

This is what you do not get with Studio ...

R-MIX SONAR (Lite Version in Producer)
TH2 Producer (Lite Version in Producer)
BREVERB SONAR (Lite Version in Producer)
Perfect Space Convolution Reverb
LP-64 Multiband compressor and LP-64 EQ
PX-64 Percussion Strip
VX-64 Vocal Strip
VC-64 Vintage Channel

Modular ProChannel
ProChannel Modules:
FX Chains 2.0 ProChannel Modules
Console Emulation
Softube Saturation Knob
QuadCurve EQ
Tube Saturation
PC4K S-Type Bus Compressor
PC76 U-Type Compressor

Plus you get 'Lite' versions of Dim Pro and Rapture as apposed to full versions in Producer.

You can upgrade the Pro Channel with new modules as they come out, but they are proprietary to Sonar, so you will be locked in to Sonar going forward.

You need a really solid system as well. DIY DAW building is not recommended for Sonar.

...DIY DAW building is not recommended for Sonar...Unless you do your homework like I did and build a kick ass system that can go to the moon & back!

I disagree. Why buy a Dell off-the-shelf with  crappy components when you can select your own? I agree you have to do your homework, but that's the beauty of building your own.

Two things I see with Studio vs. Producer that makes the diff for most people are the inclusion of the ProChannel and the inclusion of several good plug-ins. Aside from that, I don't see any benefit to Producer. Personally, I don't use ProChannel nor the included plug-ins, so I would actually like to get money back and downgrade to Studio (if Cakewalk offered that).

ProChannel is "neat", but not necessary to me, and I wish I could remove ALL modules in it every session. I'd prefer just a more stretchable channel strip instead, like Reaper offers, because that makes more sense to me.

The included plug-ins are good to get you started, and they are worth the extra $ (all together) with Producer, but I'd likely never buy them on their own.

ya but you should make clear that producer is just a gateway to PC you dont get the good plugs in producer eather.( you must buy them ALA brick limiter and so on) its ok but fact is if you have other bundles as i do. producer offers nothing but a buggy Vvocal and some librarys . if you not using synths studio is better IMO

I wouldn't buy a Dell for any reason, let alone even remotely consider it for a DAW. I feel the same way about HP, but yet, when you go to Cakewalks list of recommended PC's ... it's loaded with HP's. High end HP's though ... you'll pay more for one of those than you will for a 'Brand X' from a dedicated DAW builder.
I agree you have to do your homework, but that's the beauty of building your own.
If you have the time, and have a general knowledge of what to even look for to begin with, and the money to risk making a mistake ... yeah, it's a blast.

Not true!

You forgot about the buggy Pro Channel, buggy Take Lanes, and buggy Audio Snap.

Get your fact straight!

Sheesh!
