Just some quick background, I was a Sonar 7 Producer user, moved to Logic Pro, and I'm now back with Sonar X2 Producer.  Not trying to make this an Apple vs PC debate, just giving you "what I used to reference".  

I'm used to how well Logic Pro lets me search and select audio files, loops, etc. etc. -- in Logic Pro I could even filter the files on BPM making it very easy to slap together a piece for some video work with matched BPMs.
I can't seem to find anything similar in X2 Producer ... the search of the Media tab appears to be broken or I'm missing something?  For example, if I enter "Trance" it returns nothing ... yet when I manually navigate the loops and one shots and see many files with "Trance" as part of the name.  Do I need to provide the search with "wildcard" characters or something?  i.e. "*Trance*"?

If I want to do more complex searches like "Trance" at "130" BPM is that possible?

Unfortunately, it's only a filter. There's no search function, although that would definitely be nice and much better than just a filter.

So you still need to navigate the folders. And once inside a folder, you can filter those files by typing in a word.

That's one of those features that sounded good but just wasn't taken far enough. It should at least be able to do subfolders, and filtering by media type, etc., would be nice. Hopefully they'll put more effort into it. They should try to tap more into basic Windows search functions.

Bummer, I was hoping someone would enlighten me ... major time waster going thru all the folder/files looking for what I need.  I rarely put together a piece that is specific (contained in) to just one folder.

I could use Windows explorer search/filter features, but that would still require that I navigate the path in Sonar X2 once I locate the file in explorer ... but with no ability to quickly demo most of the sounds which means lots and lots of round trips.  Does the UI support drag and drop -- i.e. drag the file I find in Explorer over to X2 (existing track or new track)?  

Surprised this was never a high priority feature given the quantity of files provided in Producer?  I wonder if there is a 3rd party product that accomplishes something similar (designed to work with X2)?

Yeah, you can drag an audio or midi file from Explorer to an X2 track, and you can actually drag audio and midi clips from an X2 track to the desktop, etc.

Oh, and one other unrelated cool thing you can do with drag and drop: If you have Kontakt or Battery (and I'm sure other sample-based VSTs) you can actually drag an audio clip from the track view into the VST. So you can record audio, crop and bounce the clip, or use an existing audio clip, create a new instrument in Kontakt, open the mapping editor in Kontakt and drag and drop the clip directly onto a key. In Battery, you can drag and drop a clip right onto a drum pad. So you can actually use Sonar to edit and bring samples into players right off the timeline.
