I have always had this problem. From I think 4 to 6 now 8.5. Its not a huge deal as I am only recording myself, but it is a little 'wtf!?!'. I know for sure it happens with audio tracks and may have happened with midi although i cant fully recall.

I have never, not even once, had this happen...Not sure what you're doing wrong but you're doing something wrong...

...and if this was happening to me, I would certainly consider it to be unacceptable.

I have had this happen many times as well. It only happens if I push space bar without pushing r or record to stop recording- It seems it happens usually when Im working pretty fast-

JComissio,

Here is my aud.ini's [Aud] part:

[Aud]
DataDir=E:\audio
PictureDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache
PicCacheMB=500
PicCacheZoom=128
PicCacheLevels=2
EnablePicCacheThreads=1
ComputePicturesWhilePlaying=1
CopyOnImport=1
ReadCache=0
WriteCache=0
EnableCacheWriteThru=1
VolMethod=1
PanMethod=1
DiskBufSize=256
DiskRecBufSize=256
ExtraDiskBuffers=2
DitherAlgorithm=4
ZeroFillMethod=2
RecordPreAllocSeconds=0
ZeroFillDB=300
FlushWriteBeforeRead=0
FlushMultiple=1
DefaultEqPosition=0
DefaultAudSnapOfflineStretchMethod=3
DefaultAudSnapOnlineStretchMethod=1
RadiusStretchingPitchCoherence=50
RadiusStretchingPhaseCoherence=50
RealtimePreroll=0
SuspendPluginsOnBounce=1

You could try to make backup of your current aud.ini and let Sonar create it from scratch.
You may also add that parameter manually and try anything between 0 and for example 300 (five minutes).

I can't find "RecordPreAllocSeconds" parameter.

That parameter may not have existed in S6.

Brundlefly is right... It came to later Sonar versions.

I have met this issue many times and in my case it has most probably something to do with interaction between Sonar and RME ASIO driver.  This is quite painful bug: you can't predict if recording is going to be succesfull before you stop it.

JComissio,

Try tweaking RecordPreAllocSeconds parameter in aud.ini and see if it helps.  (Audio Options / Advanced / Configuration settings: Edit Config File) If not, turn off "Share Drivers With Other Programs" and "Use Multiprocessing Engine". Enable "Always Open All Devices".

Delete everything in Picture Cache folder.
Uninstall & reinstall audio driver.
Disable Windows Sounds.
Defragment disks & check for errors.

Maybe something of these will cure...

Although Sonar 6 doesn't have RecordPreAllocSeconds, I followed your other suggestions but unfortunately the problems persists.  I noticed though it only happens if I stop the recording by pressing the spacebar OR clicking the stop icon with the mouse.  If I stop the recording by pressing R on the keyboard and then pressing the spacebar to stop playback then my recordings are fine.  Of course I can do this in order to make sure my recordings are secure, but still the problem shouldn't be there at all.  Very unusual...

Does anybody remember name of a parameter that defines in which order audio devices are opened when playback/recording is started?

I've used Sonar since Sonar 2. I always hit the spacebar after I finish recording. This has never happened. Not once.

I am running Sonar 6 (64bit) on Windows XP.  When I am recording I will often experience this:  I will see the recording in progress and everything seems to be running smoothly, but once I hit the space bar or press the stop button to stop the recording, the part I just recorded will instantly delete/disappear with no trace of it ever being there.  This doesn't happen all the time, but very often.  Any clue why this is happening??

-Jon

That is totally abnormal behavior...It should not be happening...Something is corrupted in your setup...I've been using CW/SONAR products for a long time and that has never happened...Not with audio or MIDI...Have  you seen any "error messages"? Have you tried to contact tech support at CW?

You're doing something wrong or you have something configured improperly...
