Bit OT but important. I have stated here many times I am a retired MS Tech. Key word being retired, and early also.
 
I installed a SSD on both my new laptop and my desktop.
 
I did not do any special configurations, so...............now I am reading about all this stuff I must to do to optimize the drive for win 7 and 8.
 
Trim is operational, checked with cmd prompt but I am in IDE mode. Does that matter? I mean for real?
 
 

OK-so I screwed up I guess. IdDid NOT set the disk controller to AHCI mode. This needs to be done before Win installation.
Well, I finally got everything running, all plugs authorized, etc. I will NOT be erasing the drive, so a lesson learned I guess, for my desktop and my laptop.

Anyway-just found out that Win 8 sets the trim for the SSD and does not defrag-That's a good thing. I did turn off defrag on my daw which is still Win 7 so far.
 
Still doesn't solve my issue of the ide  setting.

So does setiting the drive to AHCI Mode make performance that much better? Does it hurt if I didn't? I mean hurt the drive-I don't thinks so

I had a strange problem with my SSD when I first installed it on my old Asus motherboard. The partition was not on a 1K boundry - and the motherboard would not recognise the drive. If you're already installed on to th eSSD drive - you don't have the problem ;-)

Is AHCI set in BIOS?

Yes - you set it in BIOS, and then your OS has to be set the same way. If they're not the same - you just get a BSOD.
 
So for stratman (set as IDE) the thing to do would be:
- make the registry change in the link I gave
- reboot - and go into BIOS setting
- set BIOS for AHCI (look in SATA settings)
et voila!
 
If anything screws up (like the registry change was wrong), just set the BIOS back top IDE and the Windows will boot.

AHCI is default. I had problem with rapid Storage service nor running. Also if you read options in BIOS, there much more to be confused about. i am not sure what you asking about.

With my ASUS motherboard, the AHCI is default setting. It offers Hot Swab function, and if you do not set RAID, you should already have it set to AHCI. In Advanced mode SATA configuration, it most likely will be set to AHCI already. For your SATA ports, there is Hot Plug option. My for some reason set to "disable". I have 3 eSATA hot swab ports connected to 3 gb/s SATA ports and would like to be able to plug Hard Drive one day. But I did not turn it "On" because I am not sure what it will do to the system.

I was wondering about Virtualization technology, Vanderpool technology, Smart Connect technology- ISCT configurations, (my are disabled) and Intell Rapid Storage technology. My are "disabled" and I get message icone notification, "Intell Rap Stor. tech not running).
EHCI hands off? Asmedia USB 3.0 battery charding- disable... I can not worry about it all.
