I guess the video is essential for the music. I have a hard time watching videos with my poor eyesight. The music is good and mixed very well. The music by itself seems to lack for me. Not that it's not interesting, without the visual though, it just drones on. I did try and watch the video.

When I watch shows with my wife, she just points out things that are important to the story that's just visual. Ironically, I can recognize actors by voices either by name or another show/movie they were in.

Huh. Very interesting feedback Guitarpima. I'm glad you seem to like it more than you didn't like it. :-) Not being able to watch the video, that's something I have never really thought about... The music does exist on its own on my Echoes In The Dark album though. And like some of us were discussing up above, for the genre I'm working in, which is more of a hybrid of electronica, ambient and film score, the music isn't really the kind of thing that's meant to drive into a typical pop formula or anything. As a matter of fact I've had some situations where I'm asked to make music that does LESS than what this track does... So it's all a matter of what the music needs t be. But it sounds like for the most part you were digging it! :-)

On a side note, I've got a trio of interactive music videos on my website http://www.bydavidrosen.com. They're for other tracks off the same album, and basically are a serious of different colors and effects that react to your mouse movements and clicks, with some pre-designed transitions that go to the music. You might want to check them out in the VIDEOS section of my site. They don't have the dramatic content / story of "If Only Tonight I Could Sleep" obviously, but they're pretty cool and if you have trouble following films / video because of your vision, they may still be potentially enjoyable.

This is really quite good, David - very interesting video, and the music is well-written and nicely mixed. Excellent work, sir.

cheers

yup...this is something that you're either going to "get it"...or not (kinda like a tarantino movie). I really enjoyed it. You are very lucky to have a film company relationship. I very much enjoy matching DT tunes to visuals and if we had someone local to work with I'd be knee deep in that.

I've heard your work in the past and know that you have a great feel for capturing moods....you excell in that for sure.

keep it up bro!

thanks so much! yea i really love working with those guys. i should post some links to their films on here. i scored a web series of theirs and 4 shorts so far. they actually just wrapped photography on their first feature film which I'll also be scoring... hopefully it'll be out next year and i'll definitely be spreading the word on that. really excited to get to work on it. and then after that's finished they want to do another music video for me when I'm ready to release my next album. exciting stuff :-)

David I enjoyed watching this. I think the music anchors the video pretty well...I think in the video production  could have been a little more mysterious/engaging by adding some special effects and maybe a few metaphorical images. What I came away with mostly was an argument..I never see her wasted on alchohol so I assumed it was a relationship issue mainly. Am I the only one who wants to hear some kind of lyrics? I kept waiting for something but it never materialized. The music itself is well done. Does seem to plod with no huge changes....maybe reflective of her mood?

I shared a link on my twitter feed..good luck!

Thanks so much for sharing the link Starise! I really appreciate it.

As for the argument, that is meant to just be one piece of what is pushing her. The coin that is shown multiple times in the video is pretty subtle, but that's a coin given during the AA program that signifies her being in recovery. So all these stresses, the getting fired from her job, the sitting through the meetings that she can't stand going to, the car broken down, and last (but most importantly) the cheating husband... Not to give it all away but the reason we didn't want to show her drunk or anything is this is meant to be ONE really bad day for her that almost pushed her to the point of taking a drink again.

Also as for lyrics... I know... Part of me wants to find a vocalist to collaborate with for a future album. I'm just honestly not much of a collaborator (on music that is... I love collaborating with filmmakers and whatnot). So it's gonna be hard, but it's definitely something I want to do at some point. And maybe I'll sing at some point too.  For now though, instrumental it is :-)

I see Ive missed some of the meaning in it...I didn't know about that coin...makes a lot more sense to me now. Thanks for clarifying it.

No problem. To be honest, I only knew about the coin because the director told me haha. I myself am not in recovery, so I didn't know about that either, but it's a great emotional touch that he added. My original idea for the video was the basic same idea, but it was a little more, fantastical, maybe even effects heavy, but due to budget and also the director's experience with the program which made it into a more personal project for him (which I thought was a great idea), we changed things around and made it more character based.
