Anyone using one of the newer AMD 8-Core processors? What’s your take? My Intel first Generation i7 works pretty well with what I throw at it, so I don’t think I’ll have a problem. I would like an Intel Core i7-3770, but it’s a $100 more, and that could be used to pay for the AMD Motherboard. You can see the numbers at. http://www.cpubenchmark.n...350+Eight-Core&id=1780

I use a 6 core and and one of those supposed "military grade" motherboards. All of the versions of sonar X* have worked flawlessly.

*L* "military grade" motherboards. Yeah, I thought about holding out until someone had "God Particle" technology. ;-)

You're in Texas, are you close to one of these stores?

http://www.microcenter.com/

They have the 3770k about $90 cheaper than anywhere else, but per their arrangement with Intel you have to buy in-store only. It's worth it for that price. I know...I bought one, had a friend in Ohio pick it up and ship it up to me.

I use Micro Center all the time here in MD.  GREAT prices, but yes, most of the good stuff is in-store only.

I was trying to get the District Manager to OK someone too far from a Micro Center to be able to take advantage of those prices, but just could never get a hold of the guy and ended up giving up in frustration after trying for a couple of weeks.

But if you can make a trip there, FABULOUS prices on computer parts AND on HDTV's.  I picked up a 46" HDTV for $329, and use it as my primary computer display.

I used to have a 6-core AMD processor, and it ran everything just fine, but I find the i7 chips to be faster.  AMD is still GREAT bang for the buck, however.  Micro Center usually has AMD CPU/Motherboard bundles that bring down the cost of the motherboard to next to nothing - even if you upgrade the motherboard they give you something like $40 off.

I think the issue with Microcenter and why they won't ship certain items is tied into the manufacturers wanting to give them deals so they can be competitive with the online places like Tiger & Newegg etc. but also be fair to the online guys. Either way, if you have one or have a friend near one it's worth it. I'm lucky there's one 3 hours from me and I have a friend in that area who can get me stuff.

I talked to the local manager about it, and he told me they do that to get people into the stores, as they end up picking up additional items, like TV's and cameras and printers.  So, it increases floor-traffic.
