Greetings all & Happy New Year!

Just upgraded my OS from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro and have managed to get all back working ...... except Digital Sound Factory's "Symphonic Strings". There seems to be something seriously wrong with Win7 in the way it handles files (copy, delete, move, run, etc.). It takes absolutely forever! (Apparently, something to do with indexing.) There is nothing that I can find of any use over on the Windows Help sites, so I'll ask here since it is a program related to Sonar (Dimension Pro).

How do I manage to get the "Symphonic Strings" to load? So far, I've only managed to get the process to time out and give the infamous "Program Not Responding" message and usually, I need to reboot to get it to release.

Thanks for reading and thanks again if you have the fix!

I think the "something seriously wrong" is with your system, as Win7 does all those things very well.  I can't comment on Dimension Pro, but I think that's just a symptom of a deeper issue.

I have Windows 7 and symphonic strings. everything works great. We can rule out the operating system.

The problem may lie within the system itself. Windows 7 does not take a long time to handle files. That is the first clue. Was Sonar x2 installed while you had XP? did you install the quickfix? did you install the X2a update?

Do you have all the Windows 7 updates?

upgraded...does that mean you did not do a fresh install? you upgraded from XP without reformatting the hard drive? Your system specs seem to meet the requirements.

Let's not forget to turn off any antivirus software prior to install.  Some interfere with installation. (turn on again after install).

Not ALL the DSF expansion packs are "tagged" like this (Symphonic is not) but many of them are.

Please Note: Dimension 1.5 users will need to reinstall the Dimension 1.5 update to move the files in this expansion pack to the correct location.

Maybe this is your problem...

Thanks all!
It was a "clean" install of Windows 7 and had to reinstall ALL of my software. I now have all of the available Windows updates and have updated all drivers.

Today (01/18), everything seems to be working well with Windows 7 and all programs. Sonar works as well as I'm used to (it will still crash once in awhile as did 8.0/8.5/X1d/X2 - and just did, leaving the MIDI Monitor running on my taskbar!). I'll have to reboot now, because if I try to restart Sonar, it will tell me there are no drivers.

This evening I tried again to run the Symphonic Strings installer. I clicked "run as administrator" and went back to some other activities (like getting a bowl of ice cream for my wife) and looking at this forum to see if anyone had answered.

After about 30 minutes, while reading some posts, the installer window popped up and I started the install. The installation completed and now I'm going to reboot and give it a try. I have no doubt that it will work, but it sure is strange!

Thanks again!

The strings work fine (@ 2230)!

I still think it has something to do with the way Windows 7 Professional handles large files. Most Windows forums talk about Win 7 being much slower than Win XP and something about indexing files.

Side Note: I've been waiting ten minutes for Windows to move the Symphonic Strings folder (Setup & Digital Sound Factory advertisement) to my External HDD. The folder is about 1.3 GB (large file issue again).
