I've upgrade from Sonar X1 expanded to X2 and I have some questions I'm hoping someone can answer. Any help is appreciated.

1) So what happened to the Expanded part? Is that part of X2? I never did understand what was the Expanded part of X1 so it's no biggie, just a 'new' X2 user question.

2) I had lots of trouble installing X2. I think most of it was because the install was getting ahead of itself. It took me 3 times to get it done right. Until I started leaving the task manager open I didn't know what was causing the problems I was having but it was always with the visual basic installation that was where most of the issues were coming from. I think what was causing that was because the install was still unpacking the bin files while I was running the install. I couldn't tell it was still unpacking bin files all that was being done in the background. This is on a new installation of Windows btw so I don't know if all the updates having not all come through yet might have been the problem. The only last issue was three or four dll's did not register. I was running the install as System Administrator, is it a bad thing those dll's didn't register? It did get completely through the install though.

3) I noticed in the My Store account there's no download links for x2 posted. I still have my receipts and files all backed up. But does the missing download link that with X2 we had better not lose our files?

There's two other programs, I think, a Rapture and Dimension that I have no idea what they are. Would be nice if the install included a wrapper of sorts like many other commercial offerings do that offers the install of each if you want them or not. I'm a little on the confused side what to do with these extras, I gather I don't need these programs but at the same time a wrapper would have made a lot of sense just so I didn't have to sort out what all these different files are. Not a biggie...

Just asking, hope someone can help.

1) Expanded was just some extra effects that have now been bundled with X2

2) Not sure what's up with that but I seem to recall having to wait for all my downloads to unzip before starting the install process.

3) Where did you download it from in the first place? Might be agood idea to create a disc or back up of the initial download so you have a hard copy somewhere but if you can't find the links on the site call Cake and ask what's up. Their server can be a little weird with links.

4) You can do a custom install and leave elements out. Rapture and Dimension Pro are both software synths. They're pretty cool. You should check them out.

Cheers.

Thanks on that, I'm just not familiar with the new stuff, been using Cakewalk stuff for a long time but mostly I do midi and little of anything else. I did get Rapture and Dimension installed but I can't get Dimension to register for some reason. I'm putting in the right number the My Store gives me but it's saying it's invalid. There's a few other files left to do yet which look like expansion packs. Not much info given on them though. The thing is I'm afraid it's bloating my C drive with samples I could be putting on my E drive (I have a D drive for audio data). Anyway, thanks for the help, appreciated.

With X2 you got another Dimension Pro registration code and you have to use that, not your original one from 8.5 or X1.

try to open the dimension pro icon (for registration) with right click...use as administrator... then your code will be ok.

I forget now but I'm pretty sure the installer prompts allow you to choose the data path for samples and stuff. Also when I downloaded there was a description of what was in each install package. Google Cakewalk X2 install and see if something comes up.

Also as siordinesco said to get Dim Pro (and many programs actually) to register properly always open in standalone first time using Right Click > Run As Administrator. Then manually type in the reg/serial numbers. I just do that for everything now to avoid wasting time.

Cheers.

Here are the installation instructions:

http://www.cakewalk.com/s...tion_instructions.aspx

At the bottom of that page are links to the contents of each installer. The following link goes to the installer contents of Producer which I'm assuming you have since you upgraded from Expanded:

http://www.cakewalk.com/s...tion_instructions.aspx

Cheers.

EDIT: The second link refuses to paste the specific page for some reason so just scroll to the bottom of the first link and click on the installer content link for you version. It's all there. Cheers.

FWIW, I found it worthwhile checking my download checksums (MD5 hashes) against those listed on that page, because one was wrong.  Redownloading gave the correct value.  I assume I'm ok, though haven't installed yet.

Windows-KB841290-x86-ENU.exe is the (MS) utility I used.  Runs from the command prompt.  I'm sure there are various free, and probably more convenient, checkers around.

I'll be dawg-gone if that didn't work. I didn't know that one, thanks a bunch!

Just in the event I would like to do this, can I move the already installed Dimension samples, and maybe the Rapture samples (if any... I don't know much about the program either) over to my Sample drive with them already installed?

Here's an off-topic question...

I have Kontakt 4 and I see they have a Kontakt 5. My question is, all I do is use samples to be the sounds of my midi notes. I don't do any sampling of my own - at all. Don't want to, I'm heavily invested in the tons of samples I purchased. Okay, so I'm thinking, why not just keep Kontakt 4 installed and use the Kontakt 5 player. Wouldn't that cover all my bases? I do all my effect adding in Sonar and I keep Kontakt4 to the defaults except where libraries are located. It's not much to upgrade to Kontakt 5, something like $120. I can afford that but you know, I never really get to learn these programs for the next upgrade coming out. Any suggestions?
