  • Would you describe the Sonitus EQ as colorful or transparent? (p.2)

Isn't it funny how one person commented on the "dullness" of the eq and another person on how "harsh" it can be in the highs. So subjective. It is true that when you turn on the sonitus eq, you can hear a difference even before you do anything with it. I have on occasion turned it on and done nothing else, because all it needed was a slight thinning in the low mids (which is what it does when you enable it). Things sound slightly more transparent when you turn it on.

hmm thats interesting. I have x1 studio version and theres a sonitus eq each track of the console view, whats the difference between this one and insterting effects in the fx bin

I hear it doing its job, but at the same time its subtle, almosts as if im not hearing it at all.
That shouldn't happen with Sonitus EQ. It is transparent, but it's not a 'Dynamic' EQ like Voxengo's Gliss EQ. With that, sometimes it's hard to hear a difference. Are you sure you have it enabled? If it's in the FX Bin and you hit 'E' by accident, all of the FX Bin's will be disabled. The other thing is ... less than desirably headphones, ear buds, monitors. That kind of thing.

Sonitus EQ has a -18db to 18db range for each band. You should hear a dramatic difference if you grab a slider and go all the way down, and back up. The exception being, if you have adjusted a frequency for a high 'Q' and there doesn't happen to be anything audible on that particular frequency.
Now I know that im a "color" guy, (I like a little bit of distortion, saturation on almost everything), and im wondering if the sonitus eq doesnt satisfy my ear because its possibly not colorful enough. But as far as eq goes im not sure if id know a colorful one when i hear it, since this is my first one. Help me find a colorful eq? I want something that will add a distinct flavor to sound, something that will make its presence known whether adding or subtracting.
I could be wrong, but I always thought that EQ's should be as transparent as possible. There are some tube based mastering EQ's, but even those don't really add much that's audible.

If you want color or saturation, you'll need to use a Tube Saturation plug-in such as TL-64 Saturation (If you watch the video, be careful, the narrator does not start talking until 16 seconds in. I turned up my headphones thinking my volume was too low and blew my eardrums out when he started talking.). TL-64 Sat only comes with the Producer version of Sonar. There's also a Sat Knob PC Module, but the TL-64 Sat has a lot more options and sounds better IMO. I think I read somewhere that the TL-64 Sat was just updated? I think? I know a whole bunch of those older plug-in's were updated with X2.

To answer the thread title question ... I consider it to be very transparent ... but I also never use any gain when I need to boost a frequency. I always bring down the other bands. It's a good habit to get in to, but it is more work.

Happy EQ'ing.

Many plugins if you listen very carefully, you can hear a change in the eq just a tiny bit, by inserting it into a track.
This is especially true of outboard (physical) processors or anything inserted into the audio chain. Each device adds its own color to the signal.

I very much like to use the Sonitus Eq for frequency cuts on my drums.

I do have sonitus enabled, and I do have mixig headphones and decent monitors. Also I know it's not the eq's "job" to add color, but I've tried everything else and I'm not finding the sound I want. Then one day I saw a video of someone demoing an Avalon 737, and after some subtractive eq hi voice sounded ENTIRELY different. Frequencies were cut now, yet at the same time his voice sounded twice as rich. But doing the same thing on this sonitus eq didn't sound the same at all so I figured maybe there were more "extreme" eq's to try out. The only thing I HAVEN'T thought to try is putting the eq up front, I guess on an fx send? Would a sound sent to a send eq sound much different than the exact same sound sent through a post eq with the same settings?

The Avalon 737 is a tube based EQ like I mentioned before. You won't get a sound out of a plug-in like you will that unit. You might get somewhat close, but it's not going to happen with Sonitus or anything in that category. Maybe a higher end UAD card.

The ProChannel can't be emulations of those Freddie. The band knobs are different colours.

You are right, it will never "sound" right if the ---> colors are wrong on the different bands...
How could they missed that? Hey "Cake" fix the color ASAP!
