SOLVED:  in X2a the Playback Timing Master reverts to not being set, and it is fixed by going into Preferences / Driver Settings and assigning this value..

Okay, this is a weird one.  And I'm not accustomed to being stumped.   Holds breath...

In X2a my SPACEBAR no longer starts/stops playback.  Instead it acts as a toggle between two points:  the start of the song and the current song position.   I checked keybindings and it says that SPACEBAR is reserved, so it doesn't look like I could have reassigned it.   I have rebooted but to no avail.  WT..?

The SPACEBAR behaves correctly in X1 and 8.5.  I also checked it works as expected in notepad.

This is very odd....

Edit:  just noticed that pressing the playback button on the toolbar exhibits the same strange behavior of toggling between two points in the timeline.  So this is more of an issue with the playback rather than the SPACEBAR keyboard shortcut itself.  Why would pressing the playback button toggle timeline positions?

Tried reinstalling the X2a patch but still having the same issues.

EDIT:  tried various projects and noticed it happens in some but not in others.  The only thing I can think of that is different is either when I created the project or a plug-in.   But I've had no problems with ANY of these same projects until just now.  This is totally bizarre.  Going to be interesting to figure out what really is causing this...

Have you set any loop points, or punch recording options in these projects ?
Have you saved the projects with record buttons armed in any tracks ?

Thanks, but the answers are no to both questions,

I have opened several projects just fine in the past few weeks but not made any changes to any of them (I have just been using those projects to rehearse with - I.e. I open the projects and then close without saving).  So this sudden change in behaviour has me really perplexed.
EDIT:  So weird...I go out for a while, leave everything open as-is on my PC, and all the projects are fine, even the ones that had the strange toggle issue.  Think I'm losing it ;-)

This is happening to me again (but only in X2a and NOT in X1 or 8.5).

Here's someone else with an issue that seems similar to mine, but their workaround didn't do it for me:

I have seen this behaviour as well. Seems to be random, or at least, I am not able to pinpoint the exact circumstanses that will make it happen.

Sorry to hear you are having the same issue, but "misery loves company" and in that sense I'm glad I'm not alone because I want to get to the bottom of it.  You're right, it does seem very random and I want to get to the bottom of it, so hopefully we can start determining some common steps.

Thanks for chiming in.  Was getting lonely and chilly in this thread...

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your post and I'm sorry you are running into this oddity. I did review your video and noticed that the audio engine was not engaging when you pressed play on the project (the little blue square next to the MIDI icon in the main transport module). This typically is the case when no Playback Timing Master is set in Preferences - Audio - Driver settings. Is this the case here? Does switching driver modes (WDM to ASIO for example) make the problem go away?

Thanks,
Daniel [Cakewalk]

Brilliant Dan, I think you may be on to something...

You're right, the audio engine was NOT engaged.  I tried engaging it and it wouldn't let me until, as you suggested, I set the playback timing master.  Then viola, playback worked fine.

Phew, I think this is a real fix and maybe I can get back to working with X2a again.   In the meantime maybe you can report back that this issue has been coming up quite frequently and randomly in X2a but I was not seeing this behavior in earlier versions X1 and 8.5.  Now that I know what to look for it is no longer a showstopper, but who knows why it's happening now and if it'll affect others.

Thank-you so much...I was beginning to worry there :-)
