Was the BIOS on the motherboard updated? A bunch of ASUS MOBOs went out with bad BIOS drivers. Mine had a warning inside the box saying if I didn't update the BIOS I could experience severely instability and BSODs. Lots of info online about it.

Be careful though. Sometimes updating the that stuff on an already set up system can cause other wackiness. Might want to talk to ASUS tech support.

Cheers.

Oh and I managed to get my PCI based Echo card to work better after optimizing my system for audio so that might be something to look into. Not sure if that would cause BSODs. I just had a lot of dropouts and crashes until I fixed it. I bought a Focusrite Scarlett though just to make sure I wouldn't run into anymore problems.

Good luck.

I have a Delta 66 and it's now running fine under Windows 8. HOWEVER, it was getting weird I/O messages with no sound PRIOR to a Windows 8 update I installed about a week after I installed Windows 8.
This was a clean install, not an upgrade from Windows 7. IOW the updates to Windows 8 seem to have resolved the problem.

Yeah - I've got the latest BIOS.

yet another variable

Thanks for all the ideas though - everybody. It's working great today (mind you it's strictly audio now - everything has been bounced). It will probably be some strange sequence of events that causes the crash - such as:

- on a Monday or Thursday
- hit the "e" key
- loop from measure 34 - 59
- zoom in slightly
- load a compressor

"this exact sequence of events - in this order..."

You might want to download a program called "Who Crashed" which you can get from this website. It's free for home users.

http://www.resplendence.com/main

It analyzes the dump files and offers suggestions etc.
A fantastic program IMHO.

Good luck!

Yes the biggest problem we all face, trying to keep our hardware up todate with our software. And when we do get t to work, enjoy it.

Thanks - I'll try it out...

Nice catch! I didn't mean to name my screens of death - I meant *gray* The new improved Windows 8 GSOD

until we update something again....

PS - I'm starting to suspect the MIDI interface driver now - as I've been doing audio only (everything is bounced) work for the last few days - and it's running like a charm. Of course - it could always go a week or two without a crash anyway...

I've heard the gray/grey/Gary screen of death called a "White Freeze". Equally nice image. I hope you solve your problem, and I think you are looking in the right place at a driver problem.
