In my case I'm only using the outputs 1 and 2 which go straight to my powered monitors, the monitor knob then controls my output level to my speakers. I dont know if output 3 and 4 do that also I've not tried it, maybe you can do that From MixControl by selecting output above the faders.

Good luck Roy

How are you guys that have the 8i6 liking this Scarlett interface; I have been contemplating getting this unit?

Makeshift : its a nice simple unit with great mike pres at a pretty nice price that will get me to 64bit when I'm ready for the change. so having had to get rid of my Yamaha mLAN gear to go 64 bit wasn't as expensive as I thought, also small enough to take out with a laptop if need be. So all good for me.

Huh. That's odd. That really should be effecting the output to your monitors. Is the headphone knob adjusting the level of your headphone output? Maybe you got a unit that wasn't wired correctly...

However let's check a couple things...

In the output section (the fader at the far right of the ScarlettMix mixer) make sure Mon 1 and Mon 2 are selected at the top of the fader strip. It should be a stereo channel but if not "link" output 1 and 2 by clicking the little button that looks like a broken chain link.

Make sure you do not have the Mute or Solo buttons engaged on the output fader.

Now go down to the "Routing" section and beside where it says "Routing Preset" press the two buttons and select what you want to output (Inputs, DAW, Mixes... I think you want Mix 1 but any signal should be controlled by the knob).

Also make sure you don't have your inputs in the mixer set to Prefade, Solo, etc and you have selected all the correct input sources for each channel.

Start playback and fiddle with the knob.

If it's still not working I think you'd better get a hold of Focusrite to see what's up. Maybe the the pot didn't get wired or something in the factory. I'm sure they will fix you up.

Here's their support contact form.

Good luck.

@Makeshift... I've got the 18i6 but it is basically the same unit with a few different routing options (more ins, less outs, no loopback feature). The only thing I can think of to warn anyone about is the fact it isn't a super low latency devices like the Roland or MOTU boxes which supposedly get around 2ms roundtrip. The lowest I've gotten my roundtrip latency on it's fastest setting is around 7ms which is definitely not audible at all. That's what I set it to for tracking and stuff but I turn the buffer up a little when mixing to avoid dropouts and quirkiness (usually I'm getting about 12ms roundtrip at that setting which is again not audible at all). So really it isn't a problem at all if you have a decent computer that can handle those lower settings. I'm running an i7 2600k with 16GB RAM on Win7 just FYI.

The things I like:

Great sounding pres and high Z

Monitor and headphone knobs so you don't need another unit to control levels

The box is made of steel and the connections are solid

Uses a power adapter so it doesn't drain system power through the USB link

Pretty easy to use

Comes with some fancy Focusrite plug ins and mine came with Ableton Lite and Novation Basstation (IDK if they still ship with those last two)

Works like a champ and just sounds good

Their service is really good

I don't have this particular function but the 8i6 has a loopback feature so you can record stuff directly from other applications like a web browser without and physical cabling which is cool.

Note: I do not work for Focusrite. I think I have to start saying that because of how often I blather on about these units but really I just think it's a really good piece of gear for a lot less than other similar units.

Cheers.

Here's the thread I posted when I was unboxing/installing the unit.

Cool, Beep!

I will read through your original thread as soon as I can catch up at work.  We have a couple of hoops to jump through on 4 projects we picked up from Houston this morning.  I appreciate the PM you sent me about this unit a couple of days ago as well.

If I can get even close to the round trip latency you are getting, it is going to be way faster than what I am currently running....even on my Phenom Quad Core.  I wanted the line in's on the back of this unit so that I could continue to keep my tube preamp connected to the unit, but switch to the Focusrite pre's if I want another flavor.

Heh. Sorry, for some reason I didn't realize it was you who PMd me. That thread is kind of long and boring because I detailed every little step of my set up (I was also still a total n00b back then too) but I did put in as much info as I could. This thread however has inspired me to play around with the MixControl a little more as I'm realizing I've forgotten some things and I didn't really attempt any fancy stuff. It just worked almost immediately so I moved on to other stuff.

Cheers.

I know this thread is old, but I wanted to thank Beepster and others for trying to help me with my Scarlett monitoring problem.  I eventually had to contact Focusrite and they quickly were able to identify my problem.  The solution was so simple, and my error so dumb, that I am embarrassed to tell you.  But the bottom line is that I am back recording, monitoring the correct way this time.

If you post the solution it might help others. I'm curious myself. No shame. All this recording stuff is rather confusing... even the basic stuff.

Glad you got it working.

Cheers.
