Ditto what Jeff just said, We tossed those out years ago as they were simply the worst sounding synths ever. They were among those first generation " digital" multi timbrals. They sold to fools like me that used it for live gigs running from an Atari sequencer. Rolands MT series were the same junk.

I would say the MS wavetable synth will be far better.
Just because it's old means nothing, It is not the same as finding an old analog synth which do have uses.  In post 8 you have the correct hook up.

I think it was only a 3 channel synth and you'll have to send the correct channel to trigger it. It will need some internal configuration.

You do know that MIDI has no sound and only the analog outs will be used to hear that. And that you'll need the original program number list to get the sounds you want.

Set your keyboard to send on channel one and the FB01 to receive on the same. MIDI thru is only used to pass MIDI data through to your interface. There is no use for the MIDI output on the FB01 as it has no keys. It was used only for program dumps.

So it sound to me like your listening to your computers sound and not monitoring the output of the fb01

just recap that again Cactus: what i wrote in post 8 is the right hook up...and in cakewalk it shoud be an audio track, not midi track??. And i still have to hook up the audio on the back of the FB to my mixer or line in on the soundcard?? Thanks/Ray

>No problem getting sound ,,but i'm gettoing no midi action in cakewalk...
What kind of "MIDI action" is it that you're looking to get?  The FB-01 (or any keyboardless module for that matter) doesn't generate MIDI during normal operation.  It only spits out MIDI when doing things like sysex dumps.

Are you saying that MIDI coming from Cakewalk/SONAR doesn't get the FB-01's attention?

By the way...I've got a soft spot in my head for the FB-01.  It was my fist ever MIDI module.  There's one patch I have on it that was generated by happenstance by a patch randomizer, that I can't replicate anywhere else...so it still lives in my stack.

I just have a feeling he's thinks the" sound " from the FB01 get recorded into a MIDI track.

The sound the FB01 makes can only come out of the analog outputs. It's MIDI out jack is for system exclusive transfers and the THru jack passes midi data from anything connected to the IN jack. There is no sound in midi , just data.

PS sorry for bashing the pour old dear, I just get grumpy thinking about how much money I spent back then on devises that quickly became outdated and dust collectors. Anyone want a Roland MT 32 for $1,600? I doubt it.

Put it in perspective.  How much money would you expect to get from a computer that's just 10 years old?  20?  Does your 26 year old computer even work?  Unless it happens to be a Sinclair or something (that's useless...but collectible), it takes up more room than the FB-01 and is even more pointless.

tanx cactus and dantarbill...i did an old recording ..about 15 years ago, with my FB-01. I recorde on an old fostex portastudio(4 channels). One of the songs i recorded,i like, and want to 'clean ' up the sound. I used the vibraphone and ride cymbal on the recording, and i like the sound, that's it!! so ,i'm tryong to get the same sounds ,but thru my midi keyboard and cakewalk. I'm not a hacker when it comes to midi,so that's why i lookd for help here....i'm going to try the method u mentioned cactus....and it'll be an audio track as far as i know, not a midi track....cheers/Ray

You've probably solved this by now. But if you are truly hearing your keyboard's piano sound (and not something generated by your soundcard) while the keyboard is set to local "off", then you must be passing midi back to the keyboard from a midi out port on your soundcard or the midi thru of the FB01.

Hey Dan, Those sytns only were used for about 2 or 3 years and that was it, The Atari Computer I bought at the same time was still working when I finally re cycled it only a few years ago. I still have my first PC from 2000.
I still use my Korg 05w as it sound pretty good still.
