After a good 5 year run on my last machine I'm finally upgrading.

Simple question: Can I set up a RAID 1 after I've already set up the OS drive or must I reinstall everything post RAID establishment. The RAID will not be for the OS but only for the Audio disk only. I just want a mirrored setup for an added bit of security. The RAID is on the Asus Z77 mobo and I'm using windows 7/64 Home. The PC is only for audio and some light video work.

This is the studio PC and the majority of the applications are audio oriented only. No gaming, no office type applications.

I seem to have answered my own question in the context of the gear I'm using. I believe that in order to have a RAID configuration with any of my drives I have to set up the system that way from the start. I used a smaller HDD as a test platform and I was able to successfully install an OS, boot up, format the two RAID drives (that showed up as one drive) and operate the computer seemingly normally. I'm going to go ahead and install the OS and all associated software to get my system up and running.

I have just to tell you that I have a western digital 2 disk raid device (external) connected to my pc with a SATA cable (it goes into one of the sata ports INSIDE the pc).

This device has 2 HD and it is configured in a way that I see only 1 drive and the capacity that I see is the capacity of 1 of the 2 HD. (I think that it is called mirroring ... but I am not sure).

I use this disk for backup, BUT .... one time I tried to load a sonar song from it .... and I noticed that sonar was really working bad. It seems that the throughput was absolutely slow ... and I had to copy those songs to a "normal" (not raid) drive....

I am NOT an expert on raid ... but I noticed this thing....

I have a RAID mirrored disk - drive D - which is dedicated to 'Data' only.  My C: disk is a separate (not in the RAID) SSD and that's where my OS and all my programs live.  I bought the PC from Scan in the UK who are one of the leading DAW PC builders and that was their standard setup.  Losing your programs is not a total disaster but losing your data would be.

You can setup a RAID for audio *post* OS install.

• You'll need to go into the registry and make a tweak (enables boot from a controller in RAID mode).
• Go into the BIOS and switch the HD controller from AHCI to RAID.
• Configure the RAID array (Ctrl + I to enter the utility)
• Format the RAID array
