This is embarrasing, but I still don't know what a"drum map" is,not for lack of trying,do you mean that, when in Piano Roll, the drum names automatically match?,without having to change to "generic MIDI" instead of piano keys?
Bob

Bob not to worry. Yes that is exactly what I mean. In the PRV with BFD 2 or Eco the drum names show up as they are in the synth automatically. This happens even if you change the setup by adding a drum.

A drum map is a CW thing that will do this but you have to either have one already or make one. What it does is let you put a name to a note and route as you like. It can be used for other things too. Battery 3 does not automatically do this thus you to have a drum map or make one. With SSD4 there are none and thus you have to make your own.

To me this is a big deal.

Now there is no reason for embarrassment what so ever. What is embarrassing is an unasked question.

Thanks, that makes me feel better,at least I'm kind of on my way to knowing how they work.
Cheers

One added bonus of using a drum map is that every articulation which you have mapped has it's very own Solo & Mute buttons, so you can mute or solo individual artics freely.

I've mentioned this before, but there's a great tutorial in Scott's Sonar Power books detailing how to set up drum maps from scratch and how to edit them.

Another main advantage of drum maps is that you can map to one than one drum vst - for instance I can map all the cymbals to BFD2 and then all the drums to SSD4.

You can also arrange them in whatever order you like - I personally like to have them arranged in a fairly logical order (Kick, Snare artics, Toms, Hi Hat, Cymbals) as I find it easier to see what is going on in the Piano Roll.

One question about drum maps and I guess another + for BFD2 is the large number of drum maps available for BFD2 and it's expansion kits but my question is, are these provided by fxpansion or by cakewalk?
I think it's the latter but I wish it were the former. That way every time you bought an expansion kit from either fxpansion or platinum samples it would come with drum maps that you could just copy to sonar's drum map folder.

I've always been puzzled though why, (assuming they are provided by cakewalk) there are none for EZdrummer or addictive drums and only one for superior drummer?

Yep - have to agree with that, and it doesn't matter which physical note they're assigned to, you can just drag them up/down in the PRV to get the order you want, although the OCD part of me always arranges them in note order as well

I'm not sure I understand this. If I have this right the drum maps that Sonar has are custom maps. Where they come from shouldn't matter. BFD2 will create the names for the PRV without a drum map. The drum maps that come with Sonar I believe are for non standard use as James suggested. In other words you really don't need a drum map with BFD2 unless you have some odd routing or wish to rearrange the names. With SSD4 for example if you wish to see names you must use a drum map. But BFD2 will do this for you.

DR008 did the same thing.

I stopped using the supplied drum maps when I realised that the note names were listed and updated in
the prv. But, I like to have my kit pieces arranged in a certain way, starting with kicks, then sticks, snares, hats, toms and cymbals
and so on. This is probably from learning in the prv with the general midi standard.

Using the prv I get hi-hats al over the place and the only way to change this is in BFD2's midi mapping page.
The other way, that I'm considering is to go back to using drum maps as you can just drag the notes to where you ant them
which is easier, it's only when you add and remove kit pieces that it becomes a pain and easier to let the prv view update them.

There is a complete set of drum maps that come with sonar for BFD 1.5, BFD2 and BFD XFL (and maybe some others)
those are the drum maps I was referring to. The prv update thing is good but not perfect and as Jonesy reminded us, you can
solo individual articulations using drum maps which can be useful.
