  • Line 6 UX1, Sonar X2, Mic Latency Issue

So I'm pulling my hair out. Searched every where for an answer. I am using Line 6 UX1 interface for my guitar. Pod Farm into Sonar. I've been recording electric, all is fine. I am now trying to record acoustic guitar, so I am using a mic. If I mic through pod farm 2 into Sonar, everything is fine. However, pod farm blows for acoustic (been trying all kinds of combos & sounds, and even dry- their 'dry' doesn't seem to be dry), so I am going straight into Sonar with the mic (bypassing pod farm). I love the sound I am hearing, unfortunately, there is something like a 1 second delay from hitting the strings and a sound coming back from sonar. I cannot figure it out. I am using ASIO drivers. I've also switched drivers, and still have the latency issue. If I go through podfarm, there is no latency issue, but if I run direct in Sonar, there is. If I run from podfarm into Sonar and record, no latency issue. If I go straight into Sonar and record, it is off quite a bit (and you can hear it is off while recording). Please help.

That's strange, I have a UX2 and recording without PodFarm2 seems fine. One thing that you can do is in PF2, you can go to the mixer(this is where you can choose different i/o's etc..)and change one or both sends to dry input(send 1/2 or send 3/4), this also gives you more control over your send db and has a +18db pad. What I personally like to do when micing my amp is not possible, is to find a tone that I really like and use dual tone and record send 1/3 wet into a track and record send 3/4 dry into a separate track, that way I can use the plugin if for some reason the processed track doesn't fit into the mix.
I personally really like a few of the mic preamps in PF2 on acoustic guitars and piano, a good starting point is the Studio Vocal preset under PF1 presets, and just adjust everything to your liking.
Anyways, did you adjust your latency using the Line 6 audi/midi tool? ASIO has always been the way to go for me with the UX2. Adjusting your buffers in the tool is all that I can really think of if everything in Sonar is set correctly....HTH

Thanks for the reply. I've spent about 6 hours trying all different types of sends from podfarm, including completely dry, but the 'dry' I hear and record is different than straight into Sonar. What I am hearing straight into Sonar from the mic (bypassing podfarm) sounds great, exactly what I want... minus the latency issue. Which means to me Podfarm is processing the signal somehow even in 'dry'... So since I've written, it has gone from bad to worse... now I can't even go into the preferences for Sonar, it locks up every time. I've already deinstalled and reinstalled, same issue. If you have any other ideas about the latency issue, I welcome them. Apparently I will now be deinstalling everything (including all Line 6 software) and reinstalling everything to hopefully resolve the latest problem. Wish I was Elvis and had a TV to shoot.

I will test my UX2 out sometime today and see if I can replicate your issue, I usually don't open PF when recording dry unless I want a compressor or gate....etc. and I haven't ever experienced any issues with latency. I will have to compare going completely dry(no PF) and through PF in dry mode as well, to see if I'm hearing any processing because I'm pretty sure I've compared the two before and they were the same. I understand how frustrating this could be, hope it gets resolved soon.
I will post back today with what I find. From the sounds of it, you know what your doing, so I'm assuming that your bit and sample rates are all matching in Sonar and the Line 6 audio tool and that your onboard card is disabled and that your connecting your speakers/headphones to the UX1 and not your computer.
I really hope we can resolve this, the main reason that I like my UX2 so much is the fact that I haven't had to think about latency for a couple years, except when using other interfaces, the UX2 has just always worked and hopefully we can get that for you too.

This is a long shot but I was just reading about it... in the Control Bar's Mix Module (right click the Control Bar and select Mix Module until it appears) try pressing the PDC button and see if that makes a difference.

That thing confuses the hell out of me but supposedly it does something to fix input latency issues.

Just a shot in the dark.

Cheers.

Thanks APC3 and Beepster. I'm currently reinstalling everything. started with windows 7 64bit. I am just now getting Sonar reinstalled. I will check out the tips you've given me and write back. And to AP, yeah I've really liked the UX1 so far... I am sure there is a fix for this.

Latest update: Pressing the PDC button actually helps when listening while playing (still off every so slightly); however, recording is off by as much as if I didn't press the PDC button. I've checked and double checked my settings an everything seems to be right. Just reinstalled Windows 7 64 bit. Internal sounds card disabled,. Installed Line 6 UX1 Drivers (nothing else). Just reinstalled Sonar X2 Producer with 2A. Nothing else has been installed on the computer. Only real change I've made to Sonar is to switch to ASIO drivers. Switching to other drivers has the same latency issue. I opened a single audio track. Tried both 1-2 and 3-4 inputs. Only output I have is 1-2. Latency problem for both inputs. Guess I'll keep searching the web after I go drink a few beers to relax... Man, and the sound coming into Sonar from the mic and my guitar is SWEET... feel like someone is messing with me... 'you can hear but but you can't record it to the beat!'

...Switching to other drivers...
Forget about other drivers.  Definitely stick with ASIO for Line 6 devices.

Well it's cool that button kind of did something. Seriously, I still don't really know what it's for so you kind of tested it for me... lol.

However I reread your posts and I'm not seeing that you've adjusted you buffers incrementally. Perhaps I missed it or I'm not understanding your set up but...

Open whatever driver software came with whatever device you are trying to record and find where you set your recording buffers (check the manual). Lower it in increments until it starts making pops or causing freeze ups then turn it up to the last working setting.

If it's still causing delay from there then turn off all unnecessary internal effects. Still not working? Start "Freezing" your tracks that are necessary for you to get your recording done and "Archiving" any tracks that you don't need to hear at all.

Then start reducing your buffers in increments again until things sound right and you are a not having dropouts/pops/freezes/etc...

If it is STILL not working call Cakewalk support and ask them about optimizing your system and whether they know of any hardware conflicts with your gear.

You can also see if there are any weird resource spikes causing problems by running DPC Latency Checker which is free and will come up in a google search (Cake tech will likely recommend it).

Anyway... more shots in the dark but that's all I got. If I have copmpletely misunderstood the problem my apologies. Good luck.

Agreed Kev... from everything I read, ASIO is the way to go. I was testing the other drivers to see if the latency issue went away.
