The Musical Box recreating early 70's Genesis concerts is an amazing thing.  I think of it more as a theater performance as much as a concert.  It allowed me to get a little slice of something I was born too late to see the first time.

They even got the original slides from Genesis themselves.

Hi,

I wonder if Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart will try and write one song or two ... if they are still alive, of course!

Boyce committed suicide 20 years ago, Hart is still alive though.

Hi,

I wonder if Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart will try and write one song or two ... if they are still alive, of course!

One of the songs on the new album, "Whatever's Right," is a Boyce/Hart tune.

I just don't get how some people are still carrying around such animosity for the Monkees.   There are many articles out there explaining their self-driven development from actors/musicians hired to play a band on a TV show (first two albums) to seizing musical control and becoming a real band (third album playing all instruments and touring playing all instruments) within just four months of the show premiering.

They were four (now 3 living) multi-talented that individuals the producers of the TV show (who later did 5 easy pieces, eazy rider, and other indie-darling films from 70s) picked after an extensive search. This is just a bit of the four's pre-Monkees work:

Davy: Broadway star - Tony nominated singer/actor for Artful Dodger from Oliver, on the same Ed Sullivan episode as the Beatles (performed song from Oliver)
Mike:  Wrote Different Drum for Linda Rondstadt, Wrote Mary, Mary for Butterfield Blues Band (which the Monkess also recorded)
Micky:  TV star, starred in Circus Boy, played guitar in local LA bands
Peter:  Sunset Strip Folkie, buddy of Stephen Stills (who recommended him for Monkees), multi-instrumentalist

I've seen all 4 of them play in various incarnations as the Monkees and in solo settings.  I was in front row at small acoustic cafe in Philly (Tin Angel) for a Tork solo show where he played Piano, Guitar, and Banjo and did it very well.

So. please, people just need to stop saying they don't know how to play, sing, or write songs (another e.g., Micky's song "Alternative Title/Randy Scouse Git" was number 2 in UK) or worse, that they are the same as Milli Vanilla (who did nothing other than dance and lip sync). It is just wrong. Even Rolling Stain (who was one of the first to crucify them in the 60s) has come around.

By the way, here is the four of them playing during their 1996-era reunion:

FYI:
You can "borrow" the new Monkees CD on www.hoopladigital.com
You need a library card to sign up and make a free account.

I also borrowed the new Cyndi Lauper CD. I was expecting to hear her typical pop music but it is an entire  CD of Cyndi singing 50's/60's country music (with NO Auto-Tune)!!!

Seems that way.

From her web:

“When I was a really young kid, country music was pop music, so this is what we grew up listening to. These songs are part of some of my earliest memories...”

DETOUR showcases Cyndi Lauper’s unmistakable voice on country classics from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s and features guest appearances from country music stars Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, and Willie Nelson. Lauper recorded the album in Nashville alongside a band comprised of the city’s top session players. DETOUR will be available May 6 on CD, LP, and digitally.

I just listened to the entire Monkees CD. It's not great, but it's not bad either.
It is really fun hearing them again. I like the songs that Nes sings on.
The engineering varies and sounds home-recorded on some songs.
IMO, there are 3 songs that are very good.
The Hoopla stream sounds like a low res mp3  (but good enough to evaluate the CD).
I'll probably buy the CD.
It's a good CD for a bunch of 73 year olds!
