Yes, the file explorer. In Win7, open a node, then another node, ...

At some point it starts to jump to the bottom when you open a node and you cannot see the contents. You have to scroll it up. Then you open another node, jumps down again...

This does not happen in XP.

And the search often does not find files directly where you are.

I understood the Win8 desktop (not the Metro/Modern interface) is pretty much Win7 unchanged?

Opened nodes expose all of their contents in Win8. If the number of subfolders is larger than your Explorer window height, the parent folder jumps to the top. Explorer search works a lot better in Win8. The desktop in Win8 is for the most part the same as Win7, although they've added some workflow enhancements. Also, file copy is faster/better and they've added ribbon tabs to folders.

Can I suggest why not just update your operating system, say windows 7. Your going to have to sooner or later, why not sooner?

I can't speak for the OP but I'm getting it done with XP 32. I love XP and when I do upgrade I will duel boot  boot so I can keep the legacy support for some of my hardware. Why does it have to be sooner? If I can't get it done in 32 bits, another 32 isn't going to launch me to stardom and internationl fame.

Thanks, Webby, but Windows 7 would require new, 64-bit drivers for some of the old hardware I have, and those aren't available. And I'd have to re-install Sonar and all of my plug-ins...and I don't relish that thought.

It's also a $140 solution to a problem I didn't have before I bought Sonar X2!

Exactly!

I'll upgrade eventually, but changing operating systems is not a trivial matter, and no one wants it forced upon them.

My whole point was that if it had been posted on the "shopping cart" page that future updates to X2 would not install on XP (even though X2 itself would), then I wouldn't have bought it. I understand it states that XP is not supported now, but I did not see it then. And since it's most of the same code as X1, there was no reason to assume it wouldn't work.

As a fellow XP user I sympathize with you. It was not apparent to me XP would not be supported and when the X2A update did not run I was not happy.

But I sympathize with Cakewalk as well. No vendor can be expected to keep backwards compatibility with old operating systems that are well past their prime. Doing so would require significant resources that are better devoted to developing new product features and optimizing performance on current operating systems. Technology evolution is part of the cost of doing business (or hobby in my case) in the DAW world.

So I turned this negative into a positive and decided to upgrade my 4 year old computer to a brand new state-of-the-art 64-bit system. Hopefully the greatly enhanced performance and stability of SONAR will outweigh the short-term pain of writing a big check...

What is a node  Is that a folder? A program?

I am not trying to be funny I really don't use that term. I understand node when used in reference to networking.

Now for the Win 7 vs Win 8 desktop. I can't say because I didn't run Win 7 except to test it out in its pre release. I don't believe they are the same though.  MS did a lot to the explorer in Win 8.

A node is a folder. Sometimes Win7 goes into a state where, if you open a folder, it drops right down to the bottom and you cannot see the subfolders.

I would be interested if you run into this in Win8 Desktop.
