What was the problem with my suggestion about changing the note velocity below a split point?  I don't care but i am curious why that wouldn't be easy.  I have done this a lot of times.

I admit to not understanding some of this, but what about a cloned track with an EQ HP filter on the right and LP filtering on the left?
you would have good control over the blend I would think.

@glen- i think the problrm would be when the hands switch position and octaves. youd need to automate the filter to track. it would also cut off some of the harmonics of the lower notes and assign them to the high pass band. i also think with a piano vst thats multisampled at diff velocity levels you might want to keep the tonal characteristics of a key thats hit hard but reduce the volume of the hand in the mix.

I take it the exercise is to get a wider panned sound from the piano corresponding to left and right "ears" while playing?
With a second, cloned track, wouldn't the sound from, say the left hand/Left panned (with LP filter) be heard until any notes crossed, say, middle C and then the Right panned track (with HP filter) would be heard? They would of course, both be heard if both were playing, but only from their respective panned side?

I didn't think about sympathetic resonance. Crap. I like the Idea of velocity adjust now. It'll be a bit more tedious that way but I think I'd feel better about it.

  Konrad, there is nothing wrong with what you suggested in fact that is what I am going to do to keep it in one vst. I just was trying to put the two in two sliders so I can adjust them real time while the track is playing. With a filter split you can't do that.If you guess it wrong you have to redo it. Then later when you want to change it because the vocals covered it up or something you have to guess it again. With what I wanted to achieve you could just grab the slider and fix it. I was surprised there is no way to do that the way I wanted to.

Another avenue to explore might be to adjust whatever velocity curve you're using inside the vsti

  Yes! The velocity curve might just solve everything I never thought of that.It may have just been too fast of a high velocity curve that caused the problem in the first place! I'll give that a try for sure before I do anything else.

xxxsoundxxx, Thanks for explaining in more detail.  This is an interesting thread and there are some good ideas here.

Although almost all my piano recording these days uses Ivory II Grands, I remember the mic'ed up Steinway in the studio where I used to work as a session player and I remember it always had a more interesting stereo image.  I also remember the engineer always asking me to lighten up on my left hand when playing rhythm section stuff.

Note: I don't want to go back to those days of playing the same track 20 times until it was perfect, spending hours on the 1/3 octave graphic EQ to get the sound right, and calling the tuner every few days!  There is a lot to be said for 21st century software!
