Cakewalk released X2a Patch. Looks like I've taken a slight audio performance hit. I'm starting to get more glitches in playback than before the patch. I'm probably on the upper average of number of plug-ins I'm using (approx. 100 plug-ins going for a session of 24 tracks, 10 busses, 8 sends, and about 3-4 plug-ins each), but X1 actually handled the sessions better. My system is a 64-Bit Windows 7 system, Intel Quad-Core (8 thread) proc, 8 gigs RAM, NVIDIA G-Force 1GiG RAM card, and Apogee Mini-DAC using S/PDIF optical. All plug-Ins are 64-Bit, since Bit-Bridging is so bad for me. Back to X1 again.

Did you reset and rescan all your vst's per the instructions? Sorry you are having trouble.

I changed the "Buffers in the Playback Queue" to a higher number (4), and this fixed the issue. However, the first time I did this, the session audio was first silent with only one track showing audio. Closing and re-opening the session corrected that. (bug?) So, before the patch, my number of playback buffers was set to 2 (default?) with less latency. After the patch, I had to increase the number of buffers, which added slight latency, a hot-button issue with me while recording overdubs.

brconfilct, did you do this? Neither SONAR X2a no the installer does not do this automatically.

This can be done by launching SONAR and doing the following:

Go to Edit > Preferences > File - VST Settings

Click the [Reset All VST Plug-ins] button

When prompted with the message "This will reset configuration settings for all your VST Plug-ins to defaults... Are you sure you want to do this" click [Yes]

Click the [Scan VST Folders] button and wait for the scan to complete

I did. Didn't help. But I did have to increase the number of playback buffers, which fixed my issues after the patch. X1, nor pre X2a had this issue for me, not that this is immediately the culprit---just observation.

Sounds like you are using wdm for the audio drive mode. Have you tried asio to see if it is better?

I've noticed the same - definitely lots of audio glitches with X2a while playing back an unchanged project that had none in X2. Also, playback annoyingly continues after hitting the spacebar and I hear some MIDI timing issues with my drum track.

I am not having those issues at all, even with 48 tracks, 18 soft-synths, and a bunch of audio effects.

I believe I am having performance issues also with X2a.  Maybe it's because I'm still Win 7-64.  It seems from these posts that Win 8 systems are skating smoothly.  I just loaded up a project with many takes on various tracks--at least 100 takes--but almost all of them archived.  With X2, I could still record two or three tracks simultaneously with no problems in that project.  With X2a, after I stop the recording, the Now time takes 6 or 7 seconds to return to the Now Marker.  It was easy to roll back to X2, so I loaded the same project, and there was no such delay.  I'm thinking X2a has a harder time dealing with so many takes/tracks, even archived.  It does fine with a new project and few tracks.

I am using Win7 64bit, 4GB RAM, DUO-core, NVidia GPU  and I too am experiencing some weirdness wit X2a.
(and yes I did the plug-in rescanning song and dance before attempting to use X2a)

  • Song loading - now takes much longer, rough guess about 4x.  Even after project is saved to X2a format.
  • Soloing - when I hit solo I get a light show.  I can see all the controls elements (solo, record button, etc.) flash on & off on all the other tracks.
  • Decreased headroom. Had to turn everything off, optimize performance settings, etc. just to work on an old project with less than 20 tracks.  Didn't have to do any of that before.
  • Could not load Boost11 on Master bus effect's bin - tried multiple times.  Each time Sonar locked up and I had to kill the process and restart Sonar.  Finally used something else.
  • My Melodyne Editor tracks would occasional go out of sync - usually when recording.
Tweaked a vocal track to use as a reference for a singer and ended up having to delete it because even muted it kept playing back out of sync.

Edit:
After a reboot, and some settings tweaks. Running X2a in playback mode only.
No problems today with solo. Headroom seems OK (but it seemed OK yesterday too, until I tried to record audio).
Current issues/oddities...
  • long song loading times
  • sometime Sonar hangs when loading a song
  • Melodyne Editor tracks play back glitchy 1st time song is played, then seems pretty solid.
  • The particular song I was working on yesterday still crashes if I try to insert Boost11 on Master Buss.
But on another not saved in 2xa project does not have this problem.
